Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why Does everyone Hate Turned Based RPG's Nowadays?

I was just thinking about How Some of the best battle systems in Games came in the form of a turned based RPG. I also find it disturbing that I have yet to see one outside of Lost Odyssey! To top it off when ever I bring it up with my friends or fellow Forum dwellers that I want a Turned Based JRPG like what I got during the PS1-PS2 era They say that those kind of games are Boring because of a Slow pace!

Well im not to sure but to me FFX had a brilliant battle system with an excellent pace and Im very disappointed to see a lack of these kind of JRPGs maybe thats the reason why JRPGs are taking a hit because no one can get the good old battle system that we used to see back in the day! (Also lack of quality and console choice may have been a factor)

What do you think? Should JRPG's phase out the Turned Based System and replace it with a more action oriented system? Or Should JRPG's keep the Turned based system we were so used to seeing last gen?

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

The more turn based games, the better. I prefer slow, tactic-based combat over button mashing any day.

Dunno, I disliked them back in their hay-day. Turn based tactical rpg's are great though.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I think some action RPG's combat is just too simple to enjoy. On the other hand, I think some turn-based systems are too complicated to enjoy.

For example, I can not seem to get into FF6 becasue of it's complicated battle system yet I LOVE Chrono Trigger. They have similar battle systems it's just that Chrono Trigger's system is symplified.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

I would assume western devs and their integration of other more action oriented genres into the RPGs just make it seem that way. Why fiddle with menus when you can just shoot someone?

Some people don't have the patience to stand around and exchange hits towards one another (with the occasional miss of course) or some people hate the fact of standing in place when you attack and get bored of the game never to be played again. I actually like any RPG mechanic whether it be Turn based or not. I think patience plays a role in this

turn base rpgs are my favorite, that doesn't mean i'm not into ARPGs to, but i prefer the refined class of turn base rpgs.

I think it's the sense of active control over what your character(s) does in ARPG rather than the passive select what your character(s) does in TBRPG's that makes one generally preferred over the other.

Pixel Art can be fun.

It varies from game to game. Some games use it appropriately: others don't.

i like turnbased the best. thats why i like mistwalker they will always(hopefully) make turn-based game.
