Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why the PlayStation brand name is the strongest brand name in video games

Sony is the biggest brand because the Ps1 + 2 +3 sold more than Wii + Nes + Snes + Gamecube + N64 + Xbox + Xbox 360 all together!

Super Wii.

Anyway, PS3 is getting some amazing exclusives this gen. Maybe brand itself is not strong as before, but it will regain in time, probably during 2010.

well of course the playstation brand is stronger then the Wii...
ps1, ps2, ps3> Wii...

But youre forgetting about the handhelds like gameboy and ds against psp...

also it depends on the reigon... the strongest brand here is xbox by FAR... nintendo comes from a fairly distance because parents would usually say that a xbox would be a Nintendo...

so it all comes down to reigon... though the playstation brand isn't bad here... people sometimes compare them... :l

Hmmm...let's look at the possibility of maybe a stronger brand name. I give you the word "Wii". Here are the sales of various items under the branding "Wii".

Nintendo Wii console=49 million consoles sold
Wii Sports=44 million copies sold
Wii Play=22.5 million copies sold
Mario Kart Wii=15 million copies sold
Wii Fit=17 million copies sold
Wii Music=2.5 million copies sold
Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree=3 million copies sold

I realise this post is 8 months old, but the funny thing is that the PS2 alone has nearly outsold all of those combined.

PS2: 140 million

All 7 of those: 153.5 million

Tell me could the Wii sell the same amount of units as they Trey did at $600 Nope, Could the Wii sell the same numbers as the PS3 was doing at a $400 price tag, nope. PS3 lowered the Price, the Wii followed, they know PS is a bigger brand name and if they didnt they were going to be left in the dust.

I've never experienced anybody calling anything other than a PlayStation, a PlayStation. I do often hear people saying "I'm going to play Wii/Xbox/360". I do remember a time, however, when "PlayStation" was a generic term for a console. Those days have passed. Of course, those were the days of Sony's 80% marketshare, so you would expect PlayStation to be the dominant brand name in gaming.

Nowadays, the generic term is sometimes "PlayStation" and sometimes "Xbox". Never "Wii", for the very good reason that the average non-gamer can tell the difference between a Wii and an HD console, and for the better reason that the Wii is very different from the other two.

Cliché on someone that is not for Nintendo.

Here is mine: I never used "playstation " as generic term because playstation don't come before Nintendo, I don't use playstation because they are just good at copying.I don't use xbox360(even if i would way better prefer a 360 to a ps3)because microsoft are not honnest on the computer market.

140 million people disagree with you there.

310 million people actually...

POST OF THE YEAR !!!!!!!

I love when people use the scientific process to find absolute truths. Playstation must be the brand name of choice. It's pure reason, w/o fallicy.

Nah, most of those would be people owning multiple PS consoles.

Though then there are those who own 2 PS2s...it basically evens out. 150 million?
