Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Gamespot: EA benches Wii NCAA Football

Yesterday, EA announced that NCAA Football 10 would make its annual collegiate gridiron trek on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PSP on July 16. One notable omission from the announcement was a Wii edition of the academic sports title, which last year eschewed the typical soon-to-be-pro cover athlete for Michigan State's mascot, Sparty.

As it would turn out, there was a reason for EA not mentioning the title, as the publisher has confirmed for GameSpot that NCAA Football 10 will not see release on the Wii this year. "In the interest of providing our consumers with the best possible college football experience, we are currently evaluating our approach to the NCAA Football franchise on the Wii," the publisher told GameSpot. "As such, we will not be releasing an NCAA Football title in 2009 for the Wii."

EA's decision appears to be at odds with statements made by CEO John Riccitiello, who said as part of the publisher's third-quarter earnings report in February that his company must "increase focus on the Nintendo Wii platform." In June 2008, EA said that the Wii edition of NCAA Football--along with Madden NFL, Tiger Woods, NBA Live, and FIFA--had been rebranded under its All-Play label, which focuses on accessible, family-friendly gaming.

Meh.

I've honestly never met anyone who would want to play an NCAA Football game. Madden, MLB, Soccer, NBA - sure. But NCAA Football? Its kind of like the ugly step sister of sports videogames.

NCAA09 has sold 1.75 mln on all platforms so far. Doesn't really matter if u know anyone who likes the game or not ;)

Thing is EA is once again putting more of there development costs towards the HD platforms than on the Wii, even though they lost over half a billion dollars last quarter. EA FTL.

I don't understand why people would want to play a game with college students instead of the more famous American football player.

There is no such game as "5 a side schoolyard football" or anything like it in Europe.

College football is very big in lots of places in America. Especially rural parts that don't have professional teams. It is so popular that there are people who don't follow pro football and only follow college football.

If you ever go to Alabama you'll see that everybody either has an Auburn or Alabama sticker on their car.. even if they've never been to either of those colleges.

I'm not into college football. It's like pro football in slo mo. Only cool thing about college football are that they get away with trick plays that would never fly in the NFL.

I actually prefer to play ncaa football than madden. I definitely own more versions than madden. Still I am not that much saddened by this news because I can just get it for like ps3

So Wii lost the No. 1 game on Oklahoma?

The first NCAA game on Wii was a mess, scored poorly and sold lousy. If they can't do it right, then don't do it at all. Possibly EA isn't investing enough development to this to do another version justice and doesn't want to make crappy Wii games anymore.

Sadly that also means we're unlikely to see NHL 10 either...
