Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Madworld not selling confirmed

Well once again grampy puts arguments in that. We should wait for others numbers first, but I still don't see arguments here proving madworld is not selling.

Go buy Metroid OTHER M!

In Noth America in their first week these games sold the following and ended up Million Sellers (or soon will be):

Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles 76,535
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition 70,880
Sonic and the Secret Rings 50,713
Shawn White Snowboarding: Road Trip 45,840
Call of Duty World at War 44,468
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga 40,831
House of the Dead 2&3 the Return 13,910

Now, I'm not claiming that MadWorld will be a million selling game ... but even core Wii games sell over time and it is foolish to look at a single Wii games sales in one week and in one market and claim that it is not selling.

Agreed, I even found more examples (previously posted at US weekly sales for March 14)

Of all 3rd Party Wii Platinum Sellers ONLY 27% sold more than 57K first week and they all had established names or franchises:

Platinum 3rd Party Games That Had Under 57K First Week (19)

Carnival Games sold 35K US first week - 3.19 M
Lego Star Wars 41K - 2.24 M
Decca Sports 23K - 1.72 M
Game Party 7K - 1.94M
My Sims 46K - 1.42 M
Rayman Raving Rabbids II 49K - 1.62 M
Raving Rabbids TV Party 40K - 1.28M
High School Musical Sing It 25K - 1.38M
Call of Duty WaW 44K - 1M
Sonic & Secret Rings - 51K 2.02M
We Ski 31K - 1.33M
Big Beach Sports 17K - 1.17M
Cooking Mama Cook Off 19K - 1.1 M
Shaun White Snowboard 46K - 1.03M
Tiger Woods 09 52K - 1M
Outdoor Challenge 7K - 1M
Ben 10: Protector of Earth 3k - 1M
Endless Ocean 18K - 1M
Smarty Pants 5K - 1.23M

Platinum 3rd Party Games That Had Over 57K First Week (7)
Mario & Sonic Olympic Games
Guitar Hero III
Guitar Hero WT
Rock Band
RE Umbrella Chronicles
Star Wars Force Unleased
Lego Indiana Jones
(All music or well known names and/or franchises)

GOT IT - I don't want to have to teach this class again.

You teach a class on generalization?  Cool.  Show us how many games under 57K in the first week didn't go platinum now.  In particular, cull all but the M rated ganes.

There is no logical reason to do so. By average only about 10% of all games released sell Platinum or better and probably all or almost all sell poorly first week. My point was that only sligthly better than 1 in 4 3rd party Wii games that did go Platinum had first week sales better than Mad World and none of them were new IPs. So you cannot draw a conclusion either way. There is no basis to declare it a falure or a hit, only time will tell.

PS360 games tend to be a lot more front loaded, that's just the way it is. There are probably many reasons for this. A non-traditional demographic who do not have gaming as the central focus of their lives for one. The fact that the average age of Wii owners is thirty, an age where the compulsion for instant gratification is weaker for another. Like myself, even if I want a game I feel no need to rush out and get it day 1. I'll probably get it when I've caught up on my backlog of games that I have on hand. It may be 3 months from now but I will get it.

A game like this would be especially affected by this since propotionally greater percentages of Wii owner's have either outgrown their need for instant gratification or are too young to purchase the game.

I think the game will go Platinum, you think it will fail. As this point we are both just guessing. It had an almost 50% better first week than Call of Duty WaW and that sold a million despite all the predictions in these forums that this would never happen.

World at War is a FPS (Very popular genre) with the Call of Duty name pushing it along. Madworld is a low profile, mature action game with very little name recognition. I just don't see Madworld selling one million copies, considering the lack of replay value will hurt the games legs in the long run.

I find it funny that every review I've seen talks about the high replay value. Yet you, a person who has probably not gone withing 10 feet of the game, state that it has none.

I'm guessing you haven't gamed for even a decade. Games used to take 3-7 hours to beat. The replay value comes in at doing them on higher difficulties, aiming for higher scores, and generally trying to get as good as you can at the game...because it's fun!

This is probably a wild assumption, but I'm guessing if a game doesn't have online, you only beat it once?

HATING OPHELIA- Coming soon from Markosia Comics!

Madworld can't do what RE or CoD did for the Wii. RE and CoD are established franchises and the only games that managed to sell 1mil+ with a M rating.
Madworld has no name recognition and it just won't happen.

FootballFan - "GT has never been bigger than Halo. Now do a comparison between the two attach ratios and watch GT get stomped by Halo. Reach will sell 5 million more than GT5. Quote me on it."

@Shanobi

The game last maybe 5 hours. For the people who have yet to buy the game, they see that, the $50 price tag, and in their mind, they can't possibly think its worth $10 an hour. I doubt they say "if I play it on the harder difficulties, I can extend my playtime by 3 hours." C'mon, these are different times, seeing 5 hours is like saying "rental" to people, no matter what the game has hidden underneath. People who have played it are saying this.

It's interesting going back and looking through the thread about CoD5 supposedly flopping, and the comments saying that believing the game could have legs was "deluded" because it was the kind of game that should sell on day 1. One in particular is still making the same rash, early judgements, he hasn't learned his lesson yet. I'm not one to name names, but it'd be nice if people at least looked over their earlier posts, and learn from the ones that are mistaken in retrospect.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Insults? jeez. If people who have yet to buy the game see "short length" in a review, Will they care about harder difficulties adding replay value? IGN even said that its rather short, but if you play it on a harder difficulty, it adds a couple hours since its a challenge. Hell, if thats the case, every game has more replay value, because there is harder difficulties. But thats not the case now, is it?

Resident evil 5 is about 8 hours long and the online co op sucks but then again it is resident evil. anyway I still think madworld will reach a mil.

Wichdog69

hopefully it has legs cause 3rd party developers cannot keep this up forever somethings gotta give

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity.
