Forums - Gaming Discussion - just how reliable iare VGChartz numbers?

One thing to learn is to stay away from the crap site called http://nexgenwars.com/ . I used to visit that site a long time ago when I didn't know about VGChartz, but pretty much it is completely useless site.

and to be fair , I owe u an apology too
I thought u made this account just for bashing , I'm sorry

One thing to learn, do not antagonize the locals they can be a little touchy.

To answer your question I think they are as accurate as you are likely to find and as others have pointed out the discrepancy for the numbers in the case you presented can for the most part be attributed to countries within regions differing.

Well, every reliable number organization says VGChartz numbers are really unreliable and shouldn't be trusted.  Take that for what it's worth.

Example: Here are the official console numbers covered by this article.  That was in Jan. 09.  Now, look at the current numbers on VGChartz home page.

Don't tell me this is that NDP guy jealous of VG Chartz numbers again

I have seen VGC numbers quoted by the NY Times, Reuters, and Xplay -- among others.

For consoles, the numbers are pretty close to being spot on. The most recent major difference between VGC and NPD came with Wii sales in December 2008 -- and the low NPD numbers also surprised analysts.

The main area of difficulty for VGC is knowing how much a game is selling later in its life.

Also, remember that NPD is making estimates as well and does not have data from two of the largest video game retailers -- Wal-Mart and Toys R Us. Given that they these stores have devoted an increasing amount of sales space to the Wii (especially Toys R US), if NPD is using older data models from these retailers it is probably WRONG.

Also, be aware that official company numbers are shipped (sold to retail) not sold (sold to consumer).

They estimated Microsoft had sold over 9 millions 360 consoles in Europe. Microsoft has just confirmed they had reached the 8 million milestones in Europe this month and remember we are talking about a company that counts software sales even when the game are just delivered to the stores! VGC had posted this in news but must have realized it wasn't good for them and the news disappeared from this website!

If you take the numbers from http://nexgenwars.com/ they differ over a million too. I really doubt VGC or even Nexgenwars have any idea what the real numbers are. This is just pure guessing based on I don't know what! First I tought this numbers meant something but now I don't!

Why would an NDP guy be jealous of anything?  That doesn't make sense.

VGChartz doesn't seem to correct their guesses with the numbers released in the companies official quarterly and yearly numbers.  It seems they constantly overestimate the X360 console numbers per month.  They also seem to underestimate the PS3 console numbers per month.  Wii numbers seem to be slighty overestimated per month.

It's no big deal.  These numbers on VGChartz are just for fun anyway.  Anything that uses a guess, no matter how sophisticated the guess, is STILL a guess.  Therefore, it shouldn't be used as gospel.
