A testament to the M$ hype machine no doubt. A third person shooter that came out as peoples intered in tps was high. Graphicaly though to compare the two is a joke.

If you say so.... I will buy Killzone 2 this week anyway...but I don't think that it is so graphically superior to the Gears series... more different than superior to me...

Let me give credit where credit is due. Gears is a great looking game to this day. And when it came out in 2006 it was the first games to show off what the 360 was capable of. While Killzone 2 does look better across the board graphically, it is not the revolution that Gears was. In a post MGS4, Gears 2, Uncharted world, neither game is revolutionary. However you will find that Killzone 2 is the best looking console game out, but it is not the jump that Gears was. I actually own both games (Gears on PC). But with all the great looking games to come out since then it is no longer the king.

It's not a diss to Gears at all. The fact that it can still hang 2 and a half years later is quite commendable.

So just to make sure I understand:

Smaller userbase sells a relatively unknown TPS game at 1.36 over two weeks and that is comparable to a lower sales pattern of an extremely hyped, triple A FPS, over a userbase that was what, twice the size?

Really??

Since you don't understand,  I will make it simple for you.

The Playstation brand incase you've been living under a rock is not exactly known for their shooters (I know I didnt get a PS3 with ANY shooter in mind really).  Many owners of the Playstation would get their shooters elsewhere ( I know I did).   As such, even assuming equality in userbases.  For example,  8 million 360 owners versus 8 million PS3 owners.   I would guarantee if you took a survey.  A higher percentage of the 360 owners were interested in shooters.   This is no secret.    So even at a smaller userbase the 360 'shooter' userbase is still quite possibly larger than the PS3s.

Then you factor in Holiday season, Down economy, Lack of advertising,  Known publisher (Unreal Tournaments maker),  First 'Good' or 'Appealing' HD game around a holiday for systems with very little games and no competition from across the aisle.    Starting to make any sense right now?

The PS3 still only has around an 8 million userbase in NA.   The 360 had around a 5 million userbase in NA when Gears of War released.   With better advertising, better financial outlook,  first very good HD graphic'd title, a more shooter based userbase,  a userbase that is centered in a region that buys more software than anywhere else around the globe,  etc.   This isn't rocket science.

It isn't rocket science and I DO understand completly; you will do anything to justify your own cognitive dissonance regarding the difference in sales.  No amount of insults from you change that fact.  But if it also helps you sleep at night to feel superior, okay, here's freebie:  "You are so much smarter than me".

There, do you feel better now? HAHA.

God damn fanboys ruining threads before I even get to write my opinnion!

There wasn't any insult in what I said to you.   As it pertains to the discussion,  you have very little ground to stand on and you know it.   There isn't much to argue with the 360 and it's shooter centric fanbase.

It's the same reasoning as to why games like Street Fighter IV and Devil May Cry IV can outsell or sell very close to their 360 counterparts despite a much larger userbase for the 360.    The PS3 userbase is a more well rounded group in terms of purchasing of genres.   Where as the 360 is certainly filled with more shooter, American culture driven genres.

Sorry if it hurts your feelings but it's true.

What are the best selling games on the PS3 right now?  Metal Gear Solid, GTAIV, Resistance, Uncharted, COD4, soon Killzone 2.  All great games, but what do they have in common?  All can be generally classified as shooters.

You want to believe what you say, that is cool.  Does your opinion make it absolutely true?  No.  Don't worry though, no feelings hurt here.

Wasn't Gears 1 released during the holiday season?  That probably boosted the sales up quite a bit.

Yes, that and other reasons:

1. Gears 1 was a breakthrough TPS, that pushed the cover system, and likely was the inspiration for multiple other TPS at this point, including Uncharted.

2. The XBox console is one that has a lot of console FPS owners buying, and is the console of choice in the minds of people, as to where you play FPS games.  Gears targets the same market as FPS.  Only someone caring about minutia would end up arguing that "Gears is not a FPS, so stop comparing Killzone 2 to it in regards to sales", because they both target the same market.

3. Sony barely advertises anything.  The fact they didn't release Killzone 2 over the holidays is proof they didn't want to have it as a flagship FPS.  They likely don't see it as something to get people to buy a PS3 over, but a game to get PS3 owners who like FPS, to buy.  Possibly also Sony sees the Killzone engine as something they can reuse also.

I am likely missing a few things, but these stand out as three of them as for why Killzone 2 isn't selling as well as Gears of War.  Ooo, speaking on Killzone 2, I need to step out now and get my PS3 back so I can play it.  I hope the chips are good, because I am told it is all that, AND a bag of chips.

It's not an opinion.  It's factually based that North American buyers, buy more software and are more into 'shooter' games than other areas of the world.  It's also factually based that the PS3 has far less of a user base in North America than the 360. It's also a fact that even identical games that are multi-platform (Of the shooting genre) almost ALWAYS sell better on the 360 than the PS3.

You were trying to imply Kill Zone 2 was hyped like Halo 3 was and was a lock to be a AAA game?    That's so ludicrous is doesn't even deserve a response. While Gears of War was just this trash game that no one knew about that defied all odds.   Please.

One of the producers of the biggest shooter franchises ever makes a new shooter game exclusively for the Xbox 360 around the holiday season when there is almost no other 'big' quality title out for the system?  Sales are somewhat sluggish to start but legs carry it to almost the 6 million mark because it's a fun game that other people enjoy to play.  When you factor in other things that benefited Gears of War initial/ original sales it's very easy to see that they are comparable.

I think it's safe to say that in general, the 360 users are way more interested in shooters than owners of other consoles.

+1

It isn't called shooter box without a reason :)

Hmm...what are some of the biggest PS3 exclusives?

  • Uncharted - third person shooter
  • Killzone 2 - shooter
  • RAtchet & Clank - platformer/shooter
  • Metal Gear Solid 4 - stealth shooter
  • Resistance - shooter
  • Haze - shooter

What are the other big PS3 exclusives (THAT ARE RELEASED)?

  • Little Big Planet
  • Valkyria Chronicles

Yup, the PS3 totally isn't a shooter box.

-edit-

And i'm sure there are things I've missed, I'm just pointing out the PS3 has a lot of shooters too.
