Forums - Sales Discussion - The Real showdown: Gears of War 1 vs Killzone 2

How come we do not compare Killzone 2 sales to Gears of War 2 sales? Both games were released within a few months of each other and both are sequels to popular games.

BTW: Killzone 2 on its own is not enough to warrant buying a PS3. There is still the big issue of $400 retail price for a PS3 console.

Sure it is.  KZ2 is a wonderful game.  It is every bit the reason to buy a PS3 as Gears of War was for the 360 sometime ago. It's a sequel to a popular game?  Really?  I never even knew about Kill Zone 1 until I saw the Kill Zone 2 'trailer' in 05'.   Then I rented it and it was very average and mediocre.

Gears 2 is the sequel to a 6 million seller.  Absolutely no comparison.

Kill Zone 2 to Gears of War is an accurate comparison and one that I think will hold similar.  Much like Gears of War grew long legs because of a fun multi-player system.  Kill Zone 2 will grow long legs because of the very same dynamic.  It's not the end all be all for the system because of the time frame.   One game won't make or break the PS3/360/Wii at this point.  Gears of War was released at a time where it was literally the only 'great' game that was just released.

I think it's safe to say that in general, the 360 users are way more interested in shooters than owners of other consoles.

+1

It isn't called shooter box without a reason :)

Going by the fact that the Xbox 360 has a NA centric user base which of the three consoles is the most interested in shooters.  It was also the first 360 game to really show off the graphical power of the HD consoles.

Also,  Gears of War sold about 1.36 million in it's first two weeks.  Which really given all the information we have on Kill Zone 2 right now, is pretty damn comparable.  It was the word of mouth that caused Gears of War legs to increase until it's currently close to the 6 million mark.

Even with a smaller user base than the PS3 currently has the 360 probably had as many people interested in Shooters (In their limited user base then the PS3 currently has with it's larger userbase,  based primarily off of location of sales and typical consumer.

So just to make sure I understand:

Smaller userbase sells a relatively unknown TPS game at 1.36 over two weeks and that is comparable to a lower sales pattern of an extremely hyped, triple A FPS, over a userbase that was what, twice the size?

Really??

I think Gears 1 and Killzone 2 have very different reasons for sales...

First, I think Gears was the first true NextGen shooter... And it introduced us to some very nice FPS gameplay concepts... The Lancer saw, Active reloads, a new kind of cover system, great graphics (at the time), etc... Gears showed us what is possible this generation...

Killzone 2 is a totally different story. It is absolutely stunning to watch... But, gameplay wise, it hasn't really added much. Don't get me wrong.... Gameplay is solid and near perfect, but, in reality it is pretty average for a modern shooter...

Although I see some solid reasons to compare the two games. They are both good in very different ways and for different reasons.

It is a bit true, on the top 10 most sold game, the first 6 ones are shooters (gta 4 included).

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

Plenty of Western Rpgs are million sellers as well.

Since you don't understand,  I will make it simple for you.

The Playstation brand incase you've been living under a rock is not exactly known for their shooters (I know I didnt get a PS3 with ANY shooter in mind really).  Many owners of the Playstation would get their shooters elsewhere ( I know I did).   As such, even assuming equality in userbases.  For example,  8 million 360 owners versus 8 million PS3 owners.   I would guarantee if you took a survey.  A higher percentage of the 360 owners were interested in shooters.   This is no secret.    So even at a smaller userbase the 360 'shooter' userbase is still quite possibly larger than the PS3s.

Then you factor in Holiday season, Down economy, Lack of advertising,  Known publisher (Unreal Tournaments maker),  First 'Good' or 'Appealing' HD game around a holiday for systems with very little games and no competition from across the aisle.    Starting to make any sense right now?

The PS3 still only has around an 8 million userbase in NA.   The 360 had around a 5 million userbase in NA when Gears of War released.   With better advertising, better financial outlook,  first very good HD graphic'd title, a more shooter based userbase,  a userbase that is centered in a region that buys more software than anywhere else around the globe,  etc.   This isn't rocket science.

I dont think anyone is saying that its all shooters on the 360, just that it is nicknamed the shooter box.

assumption is the mother of all f**k ups

Gears wins sales wise but and I love both games and killzone 2 the campaigns are great in both cases.

for though the MP in GOW 1 and 2 feels like luck when it comes to shotguns and blind firing to get akill roll in punch blindfire.

my son is great at it I suck at it thats my only complaint travel in packs helps and I have rarely got a guy on the ground picked him up and beat down 2 of his friends.

Priceless.

Still KZ2 is a war and chaotic firefights love the leveling system and the different character aspects.

My only complaint is Helghast vs ASA you pick your team and can change after you pick anit seams to me there are always me player on one team then the other.

so helghast can have 20 player while asa has 12 in 32 player match.

usually its not that imbalanced but there should be an even amount on both teams.

maybe thats just in the way the server is set up???

so take away blind fire and overloding the team and everythings perfect.
