Forums - Sales Discussion - The Real showdown: Gears of War 1 vs Killzone 2

Seen many talkning about Halo Wars vs Killzone, sure it's in the same time period but it's a F... RTS vs the grand game on PS3.

For me it has allways been Gears vs Killzone since 2005. Both very close in many terms, dark future fps/third person thing with great MP mode and a great story mode.

But most of all they have been the show off for MS and Sony to promote the power on the machines.

Now with 20 million PS3 sold Killzone is pushing a little more then 1 million in 2 weeks. Some claims that's fine and normal.

But looking at Gears 1, released in 2006 when the 360 barly had around 6 million units. How did it sell in the first 2 weeks? 1.3+ million!

Isn't this a proof that Sony is doing something wrong when promoting their games, Killzone 2 is absolutly fantastic and a must own game for PS3 and a true reason to buy a PS3.

Why can they push the same numbers as 360 did and does on equal exklsuive games? Can a game on PS3 ever sell like Halo 3?

Sure there are many factors but still, selling greater with only 30% of the PS3 base is something that makes u wonder even if it was holiday season, econic crisis and all that.

Predictions for 2009:

360: 39-42 PS3: 31-34 Wii: 67-70

Future projection

Wii will hit 100 million before christmas 2010 (made december 2008)

NDS Family will have sold and shipped more then PS2 at the end of 2009 (made january 2009)

Wasn't Gears 1 released during the holiday season?  That probably boosted the sales up quite a bit.

Also a freakishly good/lucky commercial that captivated people's attention and sold lots and lots of copies.

Plus, PS3 now has a LOT more choices of quality games to play than 360 did when Gears dropped.

i think alot of factors went ino those amazing sales but i think we all can agree that SONYs marketing is terrible. I never see commercials for PS3 and when i do they are not very interesting but i always see halo wars commercials and xbox commercials.

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. Its interesting really. Two big guns from E3 2005, head to head I say at this point its pretty obvious that Gears won this fight. Its released twice, and its probably assured a higher per installment sales count as well.

Tease.

I can venture a guess, though: maybe more detailed demographic analysis is in order?

Even with an install base of only 6 million units, those 6 million early adopters were probably exactly the demographic Gears was targeted for.
Early adopter of the first hd console means tech enthusiast (or "graphic whore" if you only own a Wii ;) ), thus sensible to Gears' eye-candy. The Xbox brand meant Halo and local multiplayer gaming, thus I also expect those early adopters to be shooter players and happy for the local coop.

On the other hand, even today with 21M PS3s the demographic is much more varied and less NA-centric, and the carried over users who went along for the brand were never big shooter fans. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if only about one third to half of the current PS3 install base is all that interested in shooters, so I expect sales in line with Gears 1 in absolute terms.

I think it's safe to say that in general, the 360 users are way more interested in shooters than owners of other consoles.

Exactly, plus those early adopters must also have the highest willingness to pay, which would also explain 360's higher attachment rate. They would buy the game without being too enthusiastic about it, just to try it out at least.

Also, the buzz generated around Gears was progressive and without hick-ups as Killzones'. False claims backfire pretty quickly on the web and Sony forgets that too often.

Last but not least, the first Xbox attracted those willing to play fps on a console, while Sony never really encouraged the genre until recently.

Correct, I remember the first time I played the 360... it was at a friend's place. big new HD screen, good surround and Gears 1.... Waouuuuu look at that !It was really amazing at that time.

It definitly pushed me to buy an HD screen and a 360.

Now I believe the 360 hyped this genre and attracted a lot of players indeed.
