I rented the game despite having a sour taste in my mouth after playing the demo. Here are my impressions:
1.) it isn't scary. not at all. why is that? because of the following reasons:
1a.) the enemies all move like they're drunk on gin or high on crack. they need an eternity to walk towards you, and another eternity to swing their stupid weapons. you can literally just walk away from the guy even when he's already beginning to swing the thing.
1b.) you're not alone and mostly you're not in the dark. much of the scary side of most games comes from the fact that you're alone and in the dark. these things removed, it just seems like an action game.
1c.) the graphics are good, but they're in between cartoony and obvious movie special effects. movies that obviously use special effects in their monsters are just not as scary as those that use actual people wearing elaborate costumes and makeup. this game looks like one of those movies that strives so hard to make it look real, but fails to do so, and therefore just makes the monsters look tame.
2.) it plays like an action game that really sucks. since it's not 'survival horror' anymore because of 1.), then its purely action. but it sucks because of the following reasons:
2a.) again, you can't move while aiming or shooting. this is the dumbest mechanic ever, especially since we're on really powerful hardware wherein you don't need to do this anymore to simulate horror. cops, soldiers, you, me, and ANYONE can walk, move their head, or shift positions WHILE aiming at least. its stupid because if you happen to aim at a wall, you need to stop and re-aim just to get around the corner. if cops had to do this when clearing a room, they'd be dead immediately. aim, shoot, stop, turn, run, stop, aim, shoot... then rinse and repeat. this could all so easily be streamlined by allowing the character to walk while aiming, so that he doesn't need to take so many processes.
2b.) the AI is stupid. as said in 1.), the enemies are really slow like hell, meaning you can just play with them with your mobility. but doing this is really time consuming because you have to stop to re-aim every time you run away from someone. aside from stupid enemy AI, your ally AI is quite dumb most times as well. she likes to run headlong into hordes of enemies, getting herself killed in the process, and you have to repeat everything because she can't find it in herself to dodge anything. having her there is more of a nuisance than a gain.
that said, RE5 is not Resident Evil anymore. It just completely spits on the name.
