Forums - Sony Discussion - Why the PSN fails and how to improve it ~ Do you agree with this article?

I TOTALLY agree with the article, but I don't think the PSN is failing...

When people compare the 2 online systems, they make a list of features... ... it always results in a biased way to compare things...

XBL is part of the 360 from the beginning, how it plays, how it communicates (everybody has a mic...), how the machine reacts by telling you who you could play with, achievements, spotlights on games...how the NXE architectrure can quickly evolve to propose new content with new way to present it... well everyting.

PSN is more an add-on to the PS3. A patchwork of copied features they are trying to improve with the resources they have. Sure it as (basically) the same features and also different stuffs..; but it just feel disjointed to the gaming experience to me.

I said it already, it is the result of the positioning of the two companies :

MS is about software while Sony is about technologies... it is as simple as that...

Sony won the format war and Microsoft is winning the online community war...?

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

I agree with Sardauk, the "fixes" addressed in the article are exactly what the PSN needs (in addition to more PS1 classics or PS1 BC, any chance of me being able to play FF8 on the darn thing).

I don't think PSN is fail though. My only gripe with it is the servers thing, I HATE playing a game of Call of Duty with an entirely Australian userbase then randomly an American pops in and the server changes to suit the american, giving every other player the red bar.

As for to pay vs not to pay. For me, I wouldn't buy live now (I did once before) given that sony is offering online multiplayer (which is the most basic and important thing) for free, BUT I can understand why people want to/do.

The only thing that fails is this article.

PSN > Live imo aswell.

A few of my mates that own a xbox including me that will get one during summer dont pay for xbox live. My dad will buy me one if everything goes ''good'' in school. Last time he said so i got a PS3 XD so im not worried.

But i doubt im going to need one since id rather get L4d on PC free XD then buy it to 360 just an example. And as i said i wont pay for the online. Atleast i can buy some fighting games and play with my friends once i go to their place without getting raped lawl.

PSN isn't failing now, but it sure failed in the beginning, causing a lot of people who wanted a good multi player experience to go to the X360, even though online cost money in those times. Now, Home did fail when it came out because it was supposed to be revolutionary but everyone was disappointed. You people praise PSN for being free, but what if they actually charged? Don't you think home would've been done like 2 years ago instead of it being half done right now? PSN does allow you to play online, but the total experience is just not on par with the package of Live. If Sony charged, they would've had much more resources to make Home throw Live out the window. But i guess they want to keep the free part, and it's one of their arguments against live and it's reflected here also, because that's basically the only argument i see here in this topic to say PSN>Live. I don't think that's a sound argument but never mind.

Since i haven't had much experience with PSN lately, let me ask you guys a few questions that Live does offer which i find very useful at times.

When you're playing against a random person on PSN, can you just click their name and see all the info about them in-game (played games, bio, location etc)?
Can you send a private chat invite to anyone in-game?
Can you invite anyone into your game (including people who are not your friends)?
Can you create a party?
Can you send text/voice messages in game?
Can you mute people with a mic (that means, person selective, not mute everyone at once)?
Can you send messages to people who are not your friends at any time?
Can you see a list of who you've played against the last few times?
Can you submit a player review about his behavior?
Can you see what anyone in your friends list in doing in that particular moment (which game he's playing, which mode, online or offline etc)

I have more questions but lets keep it at this for now.

Live is undoubtedly a superior service. But, of course, PSN is free.

The article makes some good points. Sony need to integrate the PSN more. I don't mean scrapping the XMB, just adding a separate "PSN menu". Select it, you can view the store, change your account, send messages, view a trophy leaderboard, etc.

That is by far the most important thing to do.

there IS a PSN network thing.

you can account management and view the store .

send messages it's under friendl list that it's other thing.

That's the point. It's strewn all over the place, and is just a small section of the XMB, so it doesn't feel streamlined.

Actually I think it's awesomely well integrated. Only thing psn really needs is a sort of I'M client that can run in the background while playing games..

Friends list and psn stuff only takes up 2 spots on the xmb and right next to eachother. I can't honestly see the issue. If they were put into 1 it would be a lot more annoying.

That's not what I mean.

The XMB is good, for navigation, but I think PSN should be a sort of application of its own. You click the "PSN" icon, and you see a variety of options in an appealing menu: PS Store, Friends List, Account Management, Trophy Leaderboard (which they need to add), Messages (they need a permanent icon in the top left of the screen, so you can see when somebody sends you a message if you are not at the system) etc.

I know it'll never happen, but I think it would be an improvement.
