Forums - Gaming Discussion - Resident Evil 5 is not Resident Evil.

RE4>Previous REs>RE5

Thats the impression i get from these forums.

Yep, same here. Which means that half the people posting how displeased with RE5 they are should not be. Because it's just RE4 with new graphics. I thought RE4 was pants in terms of an RE game. It wasn't one, I wasn't "scared" once. Playing RE2 I was bricking my pants constantly. Real sense of fear and dread and an amazing jump factor. Sorta like Silent Hill 1 and 2 but not as weird.

I think what it is, is that people are trying Resident Evil 5 thinking it should be a totally different experience from 4, but it is not.

It's in fact a great game if you liked what RE4 offered. The actual gameplay mechanics are very tight, and fun. There are plenty of 'shock' moments when you see a group of villagers come from an un-intended direction (I think RE5, so far, has a lot more over-your-shoulder moments than RE4 did, as most enemy groups came from directly in front of you).

Some are complaining about the co-op mechanics, but I think that the key of Resident Evil 5, like other games, is that the game was designed for human co-op, and not AI co-op. Those that complain about the AI - it's understandable, but again, the game is much better with a human for co-op. I'm playing with my fiance, and it's a blast.

The storyline is far better, in the fact that it actually explains the timeline of the Resident Evil series, which is a great addition to the lore of the series.

The issue of people saying it's 'worse' than RE4 is the fact that it's very similar to RE4, despite the fact we're 4-5 years after RE4, and there really isn't a lot of fresh stuff, other than the great co-op. Of course, people forget how well-recieved RE4 was, and how it set the bar on so much. It's like arguing a Halo game. Sure, H3 really didn't bring a ton of 'new' to the table, but it didn't need to, it already had a great starting point.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Speaking of which, why didn't they go the Silent Hill route and make it adventurey and freaky at the same time? They could have used the tarted up graphics like that too and kept the beautiful crappy control scheme from RE's past.

Because Silent Hill Homecoming sold horrible and the game only got mediocre scores ?

i think konami is happy with its sales. almost half a mill with both versions combined. it hasn't even been released in japan yet.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^

I want Solo Mode in RE5! Capcom is famous for charging extra $$ for Add on content I would glady purchase it.

Which is my point in some respects. Silent Hill Homecoming isn't really a proper Silent Hill game. It's taken what people actually liked about Silent Hill and put it in the bin. Same as RE series. I didn't actually mind Silent Hill so much because although it wasn't really scary or that unsettling it was still pretty much Silent Hill in it's mechanics. RE isn't and I think the way the game plays in RE is very important if you're after an old school RE experience.

I don't know why they didn't go back to the old way, it's not like there are many games like that anymore. Wheras the way RE is going it's crossing over with a lot of other games and so people might decide not to get it because they already got their does of FPS type tomfoolery. I'm exaggerating to an extent and not saying I'm right at all and I'm certainly not talking in terms of sales seriously. It can't have hurt though to go back to basics.

Prodblem I have with RE5, is that is is more of a shooter than a normally RE game. Like I think I got like 4 different weapons in a matter of no time. That is about as many as I got in Killzone 2 in the first level. Now for Killzone 2 I can accept that since it is a shooter, but a RE game to me need to be a survivial horror hwere you struggle and need to be a bit more cautious since oyu only have a crappy hand gun to shoot down the zombies.

RE4 was a stray from the old but at least it kept some of the elements of a RE game.

I think what RE6 needs to sell well is what RE4 offered, but with a scarier experience that we say in the originals. I like the view camera from behind the shoulder, I think that is something that had to happen.

I know lots of people will enjoy RE5, but that is becuase they are shooter fans so it has become more generic and appeal to those people.

I think the series should return to its roots. It use to be the leader of the survival horror genre now it's just a generic action/3rd person shooter game. i'll pass...

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Back to the drawing board for Capcom

To put it short and relatively simple, Resident Evil 5 is rubbish. There I said it, if you are a fan of the game and the series, that is great and I hope you continue to enjoy the game, however there is a clear sign of lazy developer values, and utterly poor gameplay.

Where do I start? there are so many problems with this game it's unimaginable, firstly the co-op buddy A.I of Sheva is brain dead, "no wait", that's an understatement it's worse than brain dead.  either she prefers to stand helplessly around, watching me get attacked by monsters and packs of ravaging "zombies",  or she would waste precious ammo on small and easy enemies, so when the big bosses come into play, she is out of ammo. How convenient.
Playing with a friend however solves that issue, but shouldn't Buddy A.I be one of the forefronts of any co-op experience?

What next...the controls are an absolute pain to get to grips with, I found myself fighting with the controls half the time, if Capcom thought broken controls will add to the tension, they are horribly mistaken, all it does is frustrate the player, it could and should have been more streamlined. Outdated controls more suited to a survival horror game, don't work in an action horror game, because that is what RE5 is Action horror.

Capcom clearly decided to sit on their laurels and release a game that is almost entirely identical to RE4 from a gameplay perspective, but this is totally unjustified in a 2009 release, not only is the shooting frustrating, the sluggish movement and knife controls top it all off. I guess you could say the main issues with Resident evil 5, are the poor controls and terrible friendly A.I, more than enough to render any game useless.

It's not a completely bad game, but some of the design choices are extremely baffling, and once again linking back into the controls, during some segments of the game, you are required to dodge attacks from sub-merged creatures, now in most games you would use a nicely placed dodge button to carry out this maneuver, but in Resident Evil 5 you don't, instead silly QTE are required to dodge the attacks, another sign of poor design choices.

In conclusion, I believe strongly that Capcom should return to the planning stages, and think things though, what do they plan on doing with the series? because as it stands Resident Evil 5 is a poor attempt at action horror, let alone survival horror. I have this thought, if Resident Evil 5 wasn't made by Capcom, or a continuation of the great RE story, but instead a new release by a different studio, with a different name...would people even take a glance at it?

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

R.E 4 blended the best of the old style and new style... but RE5 has made it to action gamey... you don;t get that feeling of isolation and pure danger in R.E 5, you have too much security- with the xtra guns, the auto saves and UR NOT ALONE...

R.E 4 had these problems slightly too, but not to the extent of R.E 5...

With R.E 5 you don't feel alone like u did in that police station in R.E 2... u dnt get that fear...
