Forums - Gaming Discussion - Extremely Long Cutscenes, What's your take?

My love affair with cutscenes began with Ninja Gaiden and Astyanax on the Nes. From that point on, I LOVED cinematics. Then, Xenosaga came along........

I still love cutscenes but now I know there's such a thing as cutscene overkill.

Oooh, I remember those well. Ryu knew how to do cutscene's right.

Ryu: Bamf! Plot Character, tell me where to go next!

Plot Character: Hold on Ryu, first I will tell you about ancient dragon sword blah blah blah. Go here to find this item for plot advancement!

Ryu: Super Ninja Diving Techique! Now I am off to place you told me where to go!

Why must JRPG female leads suck so bad?

For me it's like with overwritten literature: in general it's a flaw, but in some cases it's just part of what builds the soul of the work, unwieldy and cheesy as it might be. Case in question: the MGS series among games, Lost among TV shows, Stephen King's logorrheic tomes. Bad in a good way :)
Other times I found them plain painful to stand. Assassin's Creed mission intros and death rants, anyone? Yeah, they were not extremely long by the stopwatch, but they sure felt like they never ended, in my head...

I love long cut-scenes. MGS is one of my all time favorite games. I wish every game would implant longer cut-scenes.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^

Only MGS 4 is really allowed the stupidly long cut scenes

Most of the time they are good, and can be used well to break up the action, but in cases like AC as mentioned above, they are incredibly annoying, especially if they are unskippable if you have to try again

I always try to find a button to skip it... pressing start.. then the other buttons... when it doesn't skip.. I go for a piss or see what's on TV..

i dont mind long cutscenes , i always watch them and never skip them.

Maximum 5 minutes, and that is really way too long for most games.

In Lost Odyssey you have also a 30-35 min cutscene at the very end of the game that it's absolutely delicious, but at the end. I won't accept it in the middle of the action... Anyway most games have the option to pass that cutscenes, so it's not a real problem

I have mixed feelings about them. In MGS4, I can tolerate them somewhat since animation is lifelike. In SO4, it would be a little bit harder since cutscene animation in that game is robotic and sometimes, downright laughable from what I've seen. Also, facial expressions in SO4 are practically nonexistant. Not a problem with MGS or FF.

I'm into gameplay. I prefer the Original Nes Metal Gear games Metal Gear (1988) and Snake's Revenge (1990), over the new MG games. That's how I feel about cutscenes. Why won't some game developers let us "play the story" instead of just watching it? They really should be more creative.

btw.. Bethesda did it right with Fallout 3! The Birthday Party part was actually really good storytelling. Interactive and fun.
