I would say X360 reaching 40 million before or by Jan. 1 is way out of range.  It would require MS is have the best selling year BY FAR of the console's lifecycle so far.  The PS3 passing 30 million before or by Jan. 1 is well within reach.  The PS3 has done basically 10.5 million every year since launch.

On topic I think they hinder each other so the two can't happen together. Either the 360 hits 40mil or the PS3 hits 30mil.

Depends on a price cut with the PS3.If the price of the PS3 goes down to $299,then I can see it surpassing the 30million mark easily...but if it doesn't I can see it just reaching the 30million mark.On the other hand,the Xbox 360 will be close to 40million before 2010 but I don't see it surpassing 40million before the beginning of next year.

PS3 will 100% pass 30M with a price cut, and actually might still do it without one..especially if GT5 is released. I can see the Xbox 360 reaching 37-38M tops by January 1st

you can see that the hardware sits at ~27m for X360 and ~19.2m for PS3. Considering the yearly total (below) the X360 would need an additional 2m sold YoY, and the PS3 would need an aditional 0.5m YoY.

Currently, the X360 is doing better than last year. However, I don't think the X360 will do an additional 2m extra, so I feel fairly confident in saying it won't.

The PS3 is doing slightly worse (200k worse), so it just needs to pick up ~700k units. This could go either way, but I'm leaning towards just shy (talking 100k's) as it did very poorly over the christmas period.

30 Million in 2-3 months MAX, and MIN total sales by Jan 1st 2010 is EASILY going to be 33-35M.

since wen the 360 lowered its price it has consistently outsold the ps3 evry month...like wise the ps3 will outsell the 360 evry month after it has a price cut too...if any 1 can recall b4 the 360 price cut the ps3 had outsold it evry mnth so u know wat my point is...n im sure the ps3 will sell 30 million by nxt yer
