Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo warns software trade prices may also rise

BTFeather55 said:

If they raise the prices of their software and consoles, they could create a situation where the Wii is selling no better than the Gamecube. Part of the reason why the Wii and its games have been so popular is their price in comparison to what is out there.  However, if worldwide, they raise the price of the to $275.00 and the price of its games to $60.00, then they will really shoot themselves in the foot.  I can see the Wii weathering the storm of raising the console price to $275.00 because demand for the system has always been higher.  However, if they raise the price of their games to $60.00 that could cause them real difficulties because there have only been very few Wii games worth paying that amount of money for (SMG, SSBB, TP but certainly not Carnival Games and most of the party games) especially in comparison to what is on the HD machines.  Talk about looking for ways to kill your marketshare.

Yeah, that's why the 360 is selling million every week there.

Yeah, that's why the 360 is selling million every week there.

The reason the 360 doesn't sell as much as the Wii is because of the different sku's.  People don't buy the $199.99 model because they know it is a gimped model.  And they don't buy the pro model at $299.99 because it is more expensive than the Wii.  Now, it is true that the 360 sells games at the $60.00 mark.  However, that is because the vast majority of the games on the 360 are better in many ways than the vast majority of Wii games.  There have really only been three Wii games that have sold in these grand numbers that people talk about (four if you count Wii Sports but I have boycotted counting Wii Sports as one of these titles even though it has sold 43 million copies almost all of those have come as a result of it being in the Wii's box and very little due to any real merits of the game itself; look at it this way, 43 million Wii Sports have sold that were in the Wii's box; however, 48 million Wii's have sold that means that apparently 5 million copies of Wii Sports that weren't bundled failed to sell to keep up with the pace of the Wii).  Wii Play sold because people could get a free controller with it.  Wii Fit because of endorsements from the media and fitness clubs.  Heck, those three titles aren't even real games.  Mario Kart sold because its Mario Kart, but that was really the only one of the Wii's real games to sell all that exceptionally well, and it hasn't been picked up by 32 million of the Wii's users as of yet.  Then, there is a huge gap between the 4th and 5th place Wii games in terms of sales of about six million copies.

When you get down to the Wii's best game Super Mario Galaxy, even though it costs ten dollars less, it still trails the 360's signature game which costs $10 more by a million in sales despite the Wii's seventeen million more install base than the 360.

As a matter of fact, despite being better games many of the 360's games don't sell that well at the $60.00 price tag.

Wii games like Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Carnival Games, Wii Play, Wii Music, and Wii Sports Resort would not sell at a $60.00 price tag.

Well that was really previsible, the pound has litterally melt against the euro in the last couple of months. Lots of Europeans like me buy their games online from UK. When games in your country cost between 60€ and 70€ when they're released, and the same games cost between 30€ and 35€ in UK, the math is easy. This month I'm getting Madworld and Little King's Story for 58€ from UK, whereas Madworld alone costs 60€ in France (a few miles away).

I guess Nintendo is trying to make english pay the right price, but also make other europeans stop buying games from UK.

The Pound has always been worth about 1.50€. Right now it's worth 1.08€.

And the rest of your post made no sense at all.

I didn't say the Wii was gimped in comparison to the 360.  It's true the 360 at $299.99 is a much more technologically advanced machine than the Wii at $250.00.  What I said was that most people don't buy a 360 Arcade at $199.99 in sufficient numbers for it to make things look respectable between itself and the Wii because they are aware that the Arcade version is gimped in comparison to the Pro version of the 360 and the Pro version doesn't sell as well because the Wii is $50.00 cheaper like the DS is to the PSP.

Yes, most critics agree that the 360's game library is superior to the Wii's.

There have been good games on 360 that have failed to sell well at the $60.00 price.  The only ones that really have are Gears and Halo.

People don't mind to buy budget games for a system like the Wii because they don't expect the games on the Wii to be capable of the same type of marvels that those on the 360 are.  Many times, people with only a Wii as their console bought it because it is cheaper than the PS3 or 360 and its games are also cheaper.  They wanted a budget system and cheaper games.  If they had wanted a more expensive machine with more technically advanced games they would have picked a 360 or PS3.  However, when Nintendo tries to pass off its games as being in the same league as the 360's (with only a few exceptions), then they are slapping the customer in the face that bought the Wii because it was cheaper and because they could get cheaper games for it and I believe customers are smart enough to begin to think "This game sure doesn't look anything like that game on the other system.  Why am I paying the same price for it?"

It's only happening in the UK, cant you read that? The rest of the world is intact. I doubt that any other Japanese or foreign company will keep their prices as they are in the UK because that would bring massive losses, and that's not what you want right now.

Well, the economy in the US isn't that hot either, so Nintendo might try to raise the cost of the Wii and its games here sometime too to compensate for the low value of the dollar.

Heavens to Murgatoids.

This is a very smart move by Nintendo. All informed European know that the UK is the place to buy Wii games because prices are unrealistically low in the UK. Nintendo is finally going to get a piece of that money the Europeans save. As for the people of the UK, they should have done more to increase freedom in their area. Because they failed to increase freedom enough, their government damaged the currency. Sorry folks, but don't give up the fight for freedom.
