Wouldn't the value of the pound fluctuate? The move seems a bit greedy considering for all we know their reasoning would no longer prove true in the future, yet it is doubtful they would decrease the price afterwards.

why?

The consumer would adjust their spending habbits to the price hike presumably , if demand remains constant then ther'd be no need to.

That's only the electronics devision , software is unrelated.

you don't see sony and microsoft raising ps3 and 360 prices.

don't be a ----, seriously the Wii is the cheapest system with the cheapest games. They have to consider the loss on games worth only 50 or whatever pound value it is as exchange rates go down. Exchange rate is king, just wait and see what happens to the price of PS360 titles along with Nintendo games, they ALL migrate along the exchange rates movement.

Xbox is irrelivent, its american not japanese. Secondly the PS3 is over priced already, they can most likely lose some cash of the exchange rate costs.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Didn't Sony have to do this with a lot of its electronics (non-game things) recently?

I also find it interesting that the people doing the loudest complaining are not from the UK but appear to be from the US.

The biggest thing is that because there is no major pound-dollar decline, the 360 with a HD is less than a Wii (170 vs 180) but the PS3 is 2x (390). Prices are from Amazon in UK pounds and appear to represent MSRP, not taking into account 3 pound discount for the Wii and 10 for the 360 (there was none for the PS3).

 Err ?

January 2008 : 2 $ for 1 pound.

march 2009 : 1.42$ for 1 pound.

If that is not a decline, I don't know what it is...

You are right. But there is a difference. The USD-UKP ratio has been in this neighborhood before (see 2001) -- so it is not unprecedented or strange -- but the pound is low.

Meanwhile, the JPY-UKP ratio has not been this way since 1995.

Plus, the pound retained 73% of its value against the dollar (Jan. 2008 vs. Jan. 2009) as compared to only 61% of its value against the Yen.

Also, Americans should note that the JPY-USD ratio is also about where it was in 1995. However, the dollar-yen relationship has shown much less volitity.

This has already happened in Canada. For Example, Metroid Prime 3 cost me $60, Wii Music Cost me $50 when the Canadian dollar was trading near parity with the greenback, and I can only find HotD:Overkill for $60 now.

I didn't realize that other consumers in the world were so spoiled when it came to not paying the price for currency shifts.

Hey, Welcome to The Real World!!!

This happens so often in other parts of the world that I am not impressed at all. It's really easy to think why this happens, I live in country Z and I buy something that is produce in country X. When X currency is 1 = 1 against Z currency that product cost me 100 Z but when the exchange ratio is currency X 4 = 1 currency Z it's obvious that the product I bought before will now cost 400 Z.

This happens all the time in countries that don't have a strong currency like every country except US, EU, GB, China and Japan. So again welcome to the real world. This happens a lot a be prepare for more if this crisis continues the path its taking.

So now it's Nintendo fault that the pound is weaker?.

If there's anyone we should blame it's the US, they started it all with theif foolish thinking they could loan huge amount of money and buy houses without paying their loans monthly

Does anyone see Sony actually RAISING prices on the PS3, which is what matters here?  Ok, I can see the price cut get delayed awhile, but I am not sure you would see the price of the PS3 raised.

So when are they going to drop software prices in Euros and Australian dollars, to reflect purchasing power too. We have been paying on average 50 percent more for games than in the US for about 2 years now, yet i did not hear Nintendo discussing about bringing prices down.

The US dollar from 2002 to 2008 has halved in comparison to the Euro and Yen, but somehow, the cheapest games are still in the US.

I won't be surprised if Nintendo is testing the waters to see if they can rise prices in the States. They have wanted to for year, and may now have an excuse, so they are testing this out in the mini-USA. They are far ahead in the UK, that they can suffer a drop in sales, whilst testing elasticity of demand for the Wii in an economy very similar to the US economy.
