Forums - Sony Discussion - Can THIS kill the Wii ... not sure.

It's in Sony's interest to keep the PS2 brand strong. No one buying a PS2 Singstar bundle is even concidering the PS3 at this point anyway. It doesn't hurt the Wii for the simple fact that the Wii will continue to sell out, and a few people deciding on a PS2 instead isn't going to change that.

I think an ever better effort would be for Sony to just drop the PS2 to $100 this holidays. Then I think you'd see sales at least on par with the 360; and I think in particular it would do well as a system parents will buy for their kids, expecially given most of them won't be able to find a Wii anyway. The PS2 in a sense could be the consilitory system for those casuals and non gamers that can't find a Wii, if they aren't one of the tens of millions who already own the system.

In Europe, I say it will out sell the Wii for a few weeks.

Haven't done it this far. And i don't see any reason why white color on PS2 would boost it's sales. On weekly basis there is a chance anyway, if Wii sells out early december and won't get a new supply until late december. If that won't happen, there's no chance that Singstar bundle will outsell Wii.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Let's be honest... sales may be strong right now, but the PS2 is on its way out, because, as I see it, it will soon lose both key markets.

Hardcore gamers? Well, they're smart enough to know that first-party development has effectively stopped and have moved on to a next-gen console.

Casual gamers? They now look to Wii for a fun experience.

It's not happening right now, but this Christmas, the focus will truly shift to the next-gen consoles. So, no, this won't kill the Wii. Or anything else for that matter.

I wouldn't say this Christmas.  This Christmas it will probably outsell the 360 and PS3.  Next Christmas though it will be dead.

Can THIS kill the Wii ... not sure.

Only one thing can kill the Wii ... allow me to demonstrate.

*Iwata at a press conference for the "September surprise"*

Press: "Mr. Iwata, the Wii is a runaway success, selling out across the world for months and months after the initial launch. What surprise awaits us in September?"

Iwata: *speaks in Japanese, Translator flinches with a look of horror on his face*

Press: "What did he say?"

Translator: "He ... he said they're launching Wii 2 in November."

Press: " ... "

Wii Sales = 0

Like most people said, this would hurt the ps3 not the wii.

how could this possibly hurt the PS3? I can't believe people actually think that people would be thinking about buying a PS3, then saying HOLD ON, there's a new WHITE PS2 coming out with SINGSTAR bundled, NO WAY i'm getting a PS3 now. The people that are thinking about getting PS2s are completely different from the ones getting PS3s at this point, and certainly the singstar bundle would be even more radically different than just buying a plain PS2.

With that said I don't think this bundle means anything. It's not even a new bundle. It could have a very (very) small affect on the Wii, but the Wii will probably be sold out this christmas anyway.

This in no way will affect the sales of the PS3 but it will stop some people from buying the wii. The wii is up against the PS2 not the PS3, people on a budget will get the PS2 over the wii.
GT, if that were the case, people would already be doing that. Given the difficulty in finding a Wii wouldn't people buy up PS2's instead given your budget philosophy? Adding a white color and a singing game isn't going to suddenly change things.

Maybe this coupled with the motion-controlled games for the PS2 can harm the Wii .

The motion controlled games for PS2 are from 3rd party peripheral maker in2games, not Sony and each game requires it's own specific controller and each sell for $60.00.

That's not gonna kill the Wii nor the XBOX / PS3 sales, perhaps when the upcoming Wii-like accesoires (with the games ) for the PS2 are bundled it can hurt the Wii-sales.

Read above, it won't be bundled.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Seems unlikely, it is not like making the PS2 white is really offering some fantastic new product that has not been around for years. If they want to make the PS2 more attractive to buyers they could update it in other ways that are significant and make some sign of it having long term support by making games for it. Right now buying a PS2 is latching onto a system that the manufacturer seems to just be letting die while buying a Wii is jumping on a system that manufacturer is all about.
