Forums - Sony Discussion - IGN GIVES LAIR A 4.9

Of course the man who has an avatar that is 5 pictures of a ps3 from different angles. There is an unbias source!

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

I actually really appreciate hearing ssj12's impressions, even above those of reviewers. We know that there is no chance that he is trying to put down the PS3. He simply thought the game was decent, and worth a rental, but not a purchase. He admits it has a lot of issues, and I like hearing impressions of games from other VGC members because I know them and I know where they stand on things.

I decided to go over to the PS3 forum to see what they were saying, and it seems like a lot of them are either in denial, or are desperately trying to convince themselves and others this is a good game. In between posts with people praising it, there are a ton of posts saying it either doesnt live up to the hype, or that it is a horrible game, plagued by awful controls and horrible game play. The people defending it feel like they have something to prove, and it sounds like they just are not being wrong with themselves. They like to point out the fact that ign is just one review place, or gamespot is just one review place, but ignore it when someone brings up the fact that the average of all reviews is something like 60%, and that is with play bringing up the average. I think it could dip below that once there are more reviews out. BTW, I own a PS3 and 360, I just dont feel the need to con people into buying something that isnt good, if in fact, it is not good.

Changing channels with my voice: priceless!!!

I'll admit that I was never excited about this game, but it definitely scored worse than I expected.

Is it really possible to fix this game with a patch? From what I understand about how this game was made and what I know about programming games, it seems kinda impossible since the controls were so strongly built around the sixaxis motion sensing.

Fixing that would require A TON of coding that would have to be crammed into what is a complete (but flawed) game. And if the sales are weak, it's hardly worth the effort to do that.

The IGN review is sad for the game. Not that I'm saying the IGN review is bad, but that they seemed really enjoyed the graphics, storyline, and sounds and the thing throwing it all off was the control scheme. In IGN's case, it was mainly the lock-on system and unresponsive controls.

That's sad for the game because the controls look like they are holding back a decent game. I'll have to see if I can rent it tomorrow before while I'm still at home for the weekend.

i guess i didn't really understand why people were so excited about lair to begin with. they only thing they saw is graphics, and being a new IP, expectations had no basis.

sounds like between warhawk, heavenly sword, lair, it's warhawk, the least hyped game, that'll do the best, both sales-wise and quality-wise.

and for all those who think a simple patch would fix things... if it's that simple, it would have been part of the game.

the Wii is an epidemic.

I think that's a little harsher than it ought to be. Apart from the lasting appeal, where it's pretty much only the medals/leaderboards, the controls are what kills the game. Everthing else about the game is what had me excited for it, but the control scheme wasn't good enough. Take a look at IGN's review at the end, graphics, sound, and presentation scored fairly well (8.0, 7.5, and 8.0). That's what excites me about the game, a fresh IP with a new story and look.

IGN looked like they would have loved to play the game but were totally frustrated by the controls, as noted in the video review. I'm obviously not expecting an amazing score with different controls, but if it wasn't for the controls, the game looks like it'd be around a 7-8.

It had Factor 5, which has made some great games in the past, and is very technically proficient.  People thought, look what these guys did on the Gamecube when it launched, imagine what they can do on the PS3 with a huge budget.  It's too bad it didn't work out better for them.

One thing I'll say about the controls (and I haven't played Lair, but this is what I gather from reviews) is that any problems will be greatly exacerbated by a low framerate, which is a problem in Lair.  The same is true of Red Steel on the Wii -- it's not that the controls are terrible, which I don't think they are, it's that the framerate is so awful that you can't smoothly control the game.  To be honest, there's only subtle differences between the controls in Red Steel and the controls in Metroid Prime 3.  The difference is that one game runs at 15-20 fps and the other runs at a rock solid 60 fps.  Which do you think will be easier to control?

Ok the reviews are retarded.

The controls are really good, so i dont know where the hell the complaints about sixaxixs are comiong from. After 2 hours i can honestly say Lair motion controls are better then Warhawks hows that for a wtf moment.

Are peope such trash that they are giving it a low scores only because it has no option for analog ? it looks like they are, just sixaxis hate.

There are a few issues but surprisingly its not the motion controls so WTF.

No offense Hus, but you're one of the last people I would trust to give me a review of a game.
