Forums - Sony Discussion - How Sony defeated Sony

I don't agree with any of this.  I almost replied to the "Microsoft DEFEETED Sony thread" but somehow I held it off.  Sony is not defeated.  Nothing is wrong.  The Playstation brand is not falling.

How often do people need to be reminded.

          year 1             year 2             year 3             year 4

PS3: 5,856,110     16,871,475      20,809,951 (current year)

360: 5,895,015     13,631,951      23,279,252    28,913,386 (current year)

The above info is from this website.  The above numbers might be off a bit depending on which week you choose, but as you can see, for each systems first year they were pretty much side by side for sales.  Things look very different for the next year.  The PS3 in it's second year outsold the 360 by a little over 3 million for it's second year.  And moving onto the PS3's third year, which is the year we are in and it is far from over.  The PS3 only needs a little less than 3 million to outsell the 360.

There is even this to back up my info.  I'm sure "some" of you have seen it.

sony did defeat itself.
they got arrogant and it killed them.

i knew they were in trouble when they said something to the extent of getting "hand held gaming out of the gehtos"(referring to the psp)

hello how are you.

The thing I see of that

5,856,110 vs 13,631,951

16,871,475 vs 23,279,252

20,809,951 vs 28,913,386

If the Ps3 has never outsold the 360 in a year and Microsoft has said that the 360 will last as long as the Ps3 how can the Ps3 win?

I'm new, so be be gentle its my first post.
There are many reasons one could make about Sony shooting themselves in the foot this generation but only one will suffice. It is the overall cost.I'm not talking how much they cost to the consumers (a very big deal) but to Sony themselves.High production costs, too many SKU's and not enough to meet demand when for 07' holiday rush.Sony better learn from their mistakes or settle with 3rd place.Remember "A wider net catches more fish"

"I am neither hardcore or casual, I'm a gamer and I own a Wii."

Things that need to die in 2016: Defeatist attitudes of Nintendo fans

actually if sony launched a 299$ machine from the start they circle would have repeat itself.

but then again if they did games like LBP ,mgs4, and killzone 2 wouldn't have been so awesome as they are now.

True, except taking out of consideration any megatons to tip the favour one way or another, this means that the PS3 will need at least another year on top of the 360 in order to catch up/surpass. It'll probably do that, but by that time, won't MS have launched the next box by then? (At which point making it irrelevant).

I do agree that Sony made alot of big mistakes for the good of their company (pushing blu-ray), but I think it's a smart business move overall (taking into account all of Sony's departments). I would assume that the PS4 will be PS3.5 (in terms of power), in which case in retrospect, the leap to HD and Blu-ray that cost them this gen, may well secure their standing for the next generation.

By being arrogant enough to think their brand name meant they could do whatever they wanted to. Of course their mistakes were amplified by the fact that they went against one of the most sensational consoles of all time (the Wii) and a company (MS) with far deeper pockets and which has no problem taking Sony's strategy to the next level.

It wouldn't have been a big problem if the recession hadn't happened, but since it did they're going to suffer the consequences of their mistakes, as evidenced by Sony's recent declarations that they're going to fundamentally reorganize their gaming business.

You are still comparing one systems year 1 total to another systems year 2 total, and year 2 to 3 and 3 to 4.  If you actually took the time to read my post you would see that the PS3 year over year IS outselling the 360 but the majority of people forget about that extra year or throw it to the side.  They don't want to think about it and how without it, things would be different.

Sony is and always will be fine.

actually that is the only one that makes sense. The minute they put a 600-700 US $ price tag on it the knew it's gonna be a tough ride this generation.hopefully they will use similar technology next round(PS4) to keep the cost down .just beef up PS3 from 500mb to 2 gig ram and graphical card, use a new cell with more cores, and use a 6X speed bluray drive.

Ironically I dont think that the Cell is the limiting factor people think it to be. It may actually be viable to just have the PS4 with a dual Cell solution.

The PS3's main problem is the memory structure and GPU solution.

Its introduces a tremendous bottleneck and in a time critical device like a Video Game Console bottlenecks equal very bad idea.

Go for the unified memory like MS did this gen and let the developers decide how they want to use it.

Also a thumper of a GPU. You can never have to many shaders.

oh god please stop.sony aint lost nothing and they dam sure havnt destroyed themselfs.
