Forums - Gaming Discussion - 1up slams wii madden.

what's 1up's average scores for 360 and ps3 games? maybe it's also about 1 point lower than average ratings.

the Wii is an epidemic.

Around the Network

Gamepro gave it a 5/10.  I guess just throw them all in the tubes.  All sources that rate a game badly...

The Wii version is the worst to play, can we just move on?

Oops, except for DS version...that's the worst...

For anyone that actually doubts that 1up is biased against the Wii, they said this in the beginning of their review:

"For most sports gamers, the Wii is little more than a novelty; an amusing yet insubstantial distraction that can't keep pace with the big new-gen hitters."

The first thing they did was insult the system itself and label it as a novelty! Anyone who doesn't think they're biased is blind.

This speaks volumes for the way they review Wii games, they have clearly stated that they think Wii is a novelty, and basically said it's not 'next-gen'. This would be about as stupid as letting Killzone3 write reviews for Wii games (they said that family mode was for 4 year olds, sounds like some of the PS3 fanboys on this site).

Where are you ckmlb?? Can you even argue with their bias when they specifically said this? It seems to me that, to do FAIR reviews, they should hire people who don't hate the system for any reason besides the fact that they are 'badass hardcore snob gamers' who won't play anything they don't think is 'hardcore' (aka, not on the Wii).

ckmlb's posts are no worse than, say, shams in a lot of Sony threads, and both contribute a lot more positively to the site including the news section than I can say for the majority of the people in this thread complaining. :p

There's a big difference between what ckmlb's doing ad what shams do.  Shams is pro-nintendo and has strong opinions and expresses them but he responds, elaborates, replies and will defend his argument.

Ckmlb used to post long replies that elaborates on his beliefs, he was always pro-sony but at least he had an argument about it.  That doesn't happen anymore, all I see nowadays from him are these stupid little one liners that stirs up a lot of controversy and fan the flames and then he runs off the thread.    This is a perfect example, this was a completely rational thread where it was even posted data showing that 1up was rating things much different than the average.

How does he respond to it?  With a sarcastic snip and then he runs off without a trace.  No replies, nothing and not the first time either.  That's bordering on troll behaviour in my opinion and I've seen others banned for less.  As a mod, he should be behaving much better than that.

I don't think you have to be insane... I just think you have to have zero tolerance for motion controls. That seems to be the case with all of 1UPs reviews, regardless of system (Lair anyone?). I remember a 1UP show a while back where they spent half the show bitching about the motion controls in the Warhawk beta. I played that beta on a friend's PS3, and although the learning curve was steep, the motion controls were very smoothly handled.

Similarly, any game that makes heavy use of motion controls is criticized very harshly. If you read their MP3 review, they constantly bitch about the motion control actions. I have been playing for over 10 hours now (in fact I have the game on as I'm typing right now) and I can tell you that the game reads the motion controls very smoothly. If you aren't ADHD and actually pay attention to what you are doing you shouldn't have any problems executing all motion commands effortlessly. They gave Wii Sports a 6.5 because of the motion controls, despite it's industry average being a 7.7. I think what they are against more than the Wii in specific is anything that changes their limited view of what gaming "should be."

I haven't yet run into a single spot where Metroid uses motion control. Any of the "pull and twist" or "interact with object" things thus far have used infrared exclusively.

SSX Blur used motion control an awful lot, and it took a lot of learning to get used to. My fiancee had been a big SSX fan and hated Blur for the first hour or so, but after she got used to the controls she loved it. It's her favorite one except possibly Tricky, which she still loves. I loved the game from the beginning because I had no preconceptions about how the controls should work and was happy to learn them.

It sounds to me like 1up is just unwilling to try new things regarding gaming. The problem is that they're not hardcore gamers. They don't want gaming to change because it's easy and requires no thought to just keep doing the same thing. If they were hardcore gamers, they'd welcome all kinds of changes to gaming and realize that the best mechanisms will always exist -- motion or no motion, infrared or no infrared.

While I'd agree that we're still looking for an appropriate place for motion based controls -- Godfather is a good clue as to where to go -- it's clear that infrared and pointing based controls are in the future and will be bigger as time goes on.

You can't be very far in the game if you haven't used motion control yet.  You get the grapple beam almost immediately.  Also, the infrared sensing motion controls are still motion controls.  You can call them what you want but they are controlled by moving the controller rather than hitting a button.

That said, I agree with your general point.  Change is what they are scared of and dislike, more than the Wii in specific.  Things that challenge what gaming has been for the last 10 years upset them, and I think rather than accept that they at best are lashing out subconciously to that change, and are at worst directly trying to defeat the instruments of that change.  Either way the website has a severe level of unprofessionalism.

Lyngis, 1UP reviews 360 games 3.5% below average, PS3 games 3.8% below average, and Wii games 9.5% below average.   There is a HUGE gap there, and it's already been proven time and time again that this doesn't just apply to bad games, but good games as well.  Basically Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3 are score anomallies in the set.  They may have even been scored conciously higher than the reviewers wished to score them (especially that MP3 one) in order to try and alieviate some of the pressure put on them from Nintendo fans.

I find it extreemly funny that people ( but me and ckmlb and road killers) said that the wii madden would outsell the ps3 madden.

See I can make off-topic comments in a direct attempt to start even MORE arguing too!

madden = Zzzzzz ... Don't blame 1up... blame EA for making mediocre games.

Only problem with that, is why was last years version without online play, family play, and several other features rated bette, and why were other consoles rated better?  If 1up was more consistant, then you would be right to just blame EA.  However, as it is, it's clearly 1up to blame.

"It seems to me that Sony was just using their Playstation brand to push other technologies that weren't needed in a gaming console and considered many Playstation fans as mindless drones that would buy any console the company released with the Playstation logo."

"Well Sony saying something like 5 million Playstation fans will buy the Playstation 3 even if it didn't have any games made me immediately think of mindless drones at the time."

I'd say what you've posted backs up my earlier statement. Legend was speculating on how Sony sees it's fans and at no point directly called Sony fans anything offensive. If this warrents a warning then a lot of posters on this site are in trouble as it's common place to speculate on companies attitudes and agendas.

I mean looking at Sony's "5 million units sold without any games" comment all but proves Legend's point imo.
