Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS Home = WOW. Sony is upping the ante.

I don't have time to look or reply to any of this properly (too busy at work today ) Immediate thoughts: +ve: - graphics look cool - original stuff from Sony makes people happy - finally breaking ground, leaves MS to catch up (in virtual world anyway) -ve: - what they are showing is the "potential", not the "average playing experience". For various reasons (technical - such as bandwidth limits, no camera, etc) the average experience may be much weaker - good luck to them handling THOUSANDS of players (what they are effectively doing is building a MMO.. into the system itself) - good luck with loading times, streaming of video/sound, etc - *** they might have some serious fun filtering the PORN out of the system (audio, video, etc). Otherwise PS3Home = PornOnline - nothing to do with games (Sony forming their "own" internet) - wait till Sony start charging for items.. look cool Tshirts to put on your character. Will discuss more in a few hours... PS: WELL DONE SONY!!!!! PPS: I told my partner about this, and she was very excited. She then asked me how much a PS3 costs (and it all went downhill from there). Still not getting one ;) Now wait for MS's response...

Second Life has a strong fanbase, but it also has a lot to offer this doesn't. PS Home looks too ambitious, complex, and unfocused for 95% of the userbase out there, but too confining for the 5% Second Life hardcore. Also Sony is just asking for all kinds of legal and PR trouble with this system: how long until some kid gets molested, someone starts a White Power room, someone says f*ck in the presence of Jack Thompson? Considering how vile Xbox Live is, and that's a system people pay for / can be banned from and MS is nominally policing it, how out-of-control will this free system be?!? On the upside Little Big Planet looks *VERY* cool, although it will totally miss its market on the PS3 (a la Viva Piniata)
I agree on all points. Very good post. I too really think Little Big Planet looks amazing, but I bet they end up porting it to Wii or 360 or something. I don't think they are targetting the PS3 "Hardcore!!!" market.

Exactly. It can run at 100fps but I'll still have to walk across a room to do the exact same thing one button press does on live. Thus the "5x faster" has nothing to do with fps, just that menus are quicker to navigate than room after room to get to download.

Firstly, most of those MMO's don't sell content period. Secondly, there was no true bashing anywhere.

Kwaad, stop fighting them trying to argue it's like a MMO. It's a MMO with avatars and everything Live has. The problem I have is everyone saying "this is similar to (fill in here)" and Sony just copies stuff. Get off it. All consoles are just copies of Ataris, SO WHAT. If you do something better, SO WHAT. If you combine everything the competition has and make it better, SO WHAT. That said, this is completely unique compared to anything anyone has done on a console thus far, because of all the elements combined. As for the "speed" of everything. Uh...I'm sure there will be a menu to, at worst, exit the world and then do everything with a menu as usual. At best, the menu comes up and you just pick what you want to do from within the world. Anyway, offering this for free is ridiculous. Microsoft is making $300,000,000 a year on Live with 6 million users. What I am wondering is what the PSP connection will do. I think this fits right in with the location free service promised where the PS3 will allow you to upload everything to this Home and then access it from the PSP I would assume. The PSP menu (again, this menu concept within the world...brilliant...or...common sense...but whatever) makes me think you'll be able to use the PSP to access the world. Anyway, very exciting news. That game should be a lot of fun as well.

Which is what I just said. THEY DON'T.

Two random points for the sake of devil's advocate on this topic. Sony has presumably invested untold millions into establishing this service (for "free" - other than the $600 and specially available downloadable content). 1) Can PS Home justify a console purchase in Japan? I think the sales may inch up to 25-35k when this is out in Japan, but not much more on a normal week. 2) Can't Nintendo (in Japan) essentially negate this service with a really cohesive Animal Crossing game as an online hub? I imagine a section of Tom Nook's store where I can download a portion of DQIX and send it via wifi to my DS, or a "Hotel", where I can meet travelling avatar who come to trade goods or (simply fruit) on the 'stalk market'. Previous iterations of Animal Crossing already had 'other content' like Donkey Kong, so I don't see why the downloads couldn't become more sophisticated on Wii. If Wii sells in the same pattern as the DS in Japan, AC Wii would reach millions, potentially far more successful than Home consider PS3 may not even have a million users in Japan until May....

Just a minor point - these 6mill users include GOLD and SILVER users - not just GOLD users. MS have refused to release figures stating which are which (i.e. %'s). I'll guess that only 20-30% of users are GOLD (if even that). That's still $60-$80m/yr - but you have some significant server running costs to cover.
