Forums - Sony Discussion - Is the ps3 graphically moving ahead to fast? let's have a debate.

I think exclusives will look slightly better on PS3 while multiplatforms will remain slightly better on X360 but none of the diffrences will be noticable for people not obsessed with graphics.

@ Dallinor

I agree and @ Gilgamesh: man, things are gonna REALLY heat up then. Can't wait!!!

A few PS3 exclusives which take an eternity to develop, lots of delays, look impressive and superior to the XBox 360 games. The PS3 exclusive games are tech demo games. The exclusive PS3 games such as Uncharted, MGS 4, Kill Zone 2 are released like one game every 6 or 9 months. So a long wait in between standout PS3 exclusive games. UnCharted 2 will arrive late October 2009, around 8 months after Killzone 2 launched. God of War 3 is due out March 2010. Gran Turismo 5 will be out later in 2010.

Ironically the multi-platform games still perform and look better on XBox 360. The PS3 games need a lot longer to get them to look better by glossy pre-rendered CG graphics in PS3 games. Multi-platform titles have to be rushed out quickly onto market to keep up with consumers demand for new product.

PS3 main problem which  is adversely impacted on its software sales is the ludicrous price for PS3 console that has remained at $400 for around 18 months and counting. A high price to pay for an entry level PS3 console. A rival current generation gaming machine that provides 90% of the same experience is found elsewhere at half the price of PS3.

Wow....so much hostility in that post, why so mad?

I agree with you almost fully. The area we differ is with KZ2. Trust me, that demo does NO justice for the full game. Towards the end especially, is some of the greatest artwork I've EVER witnessed.

That said, I agree with the majority, the PS3 will probably stay ahead (graphically). It just won't destroy the 360, but it's games do/will look noticeably better.

My $0.02 :)

That is more or less my point with noticeably being the key word.

To some noticeably = OMGZERS 360 looks last gen

To others noticeably = well yeah, maybe this game does look a tiny bit better, can't really tell though.

Truth = it all depends on the game and the person.

The point is that we've reached diminishing returns in graphics. And not just about PS3 vs 360.

Even the most powerful graphical beast of a game (Crysis) won't look noticeably better to an untrained eye than the best looking ps360 games. My gf is more likely to appreciate the fact that it renders well beaches and luscious vegetation than if it employs object-based motion blur or HDR/iris effects.

The nitpicking is for us game geeks, exactly like dissecting each film scene composition and lighting is for movie buffs and students. Thus when we say "noticeably" we mean for us, though the rest of the world lives by different rules.

1. MS says there will be better looking games then killzone 2 on 360
2. tekken 6 producer says the graphically maxed out the 360

I disagree with this, because "diminishing returns" is always relative. Now, I don't discount the fact that we do oftentimes place too much emphasis on graphics, but every generation shows advances that are easily distinguishable from the generation before. Every step of the way over the past 15 years, I've bought the latest technology thinking, 'Damn, could the graphics EVER get any better than THIS!"

Yup, they always do, usually in six to twelve months! I particularly remember being floored by the "realism" of Madden 2001 when the PS2 launched. Game doesn't look so hot anymore.

Ten years from now systems will be able to render so much more architecturally, and I think facial animations especially will improve to such a huge degree, that the tech will make Killzone 2 look silly. Wash. Rinse. Repeat ten years after that, and then ten years after THAT ... etc ...

I think its evened out for the most part now, espeially since some developers (EA) are starting to make the PS3 their lead console (which makes sense as the PS3 and 360 versions end up pretty close porting FROM the PS3 rather than TO the PS3)  I think as this gen progresses it will basically come down to what exclusives you like better.  As for graphics I think that Alan Wake might open some eyes graphically and Heavy Rain has the potential to beat KZ2.  And Uncharted 2 is my most anticpated game because of its colors schemes

This was a bit incoherent... what was the point?

That big exclusives are few and far inbetween? True for all consoles, the PS3 is getting more of them at this point though.

That multi-platform games perform better on the 360? Sweeping generalization there. Most of the big multiplatforms are mixed bags (GTAIV has better filters on PS3, better AA and framerate on 360. Fallout 3 has better textures on PS3, better framerate on 360) and we still have to evaluate the cases where PS3 is the lead target (FFXIII, Tekken6)

Price? Seriously offtopic.

Plus "90% of the same experience at half the price"? The other current generation gaming machine will offer me 0% of the experience if I want to watch my BR movies and 0% of the experience of playing my current library of PS3 games (KZ2, MGS4, LBP, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, R&C). Just to say that I don't know what "same experience" was supposed to mean.

Killzone 2 best graphics in a console game this generation. No future console game will come close to matching the realistic graphics that are in Killzone 2. PS3 is the strongest graphics console this generation. No XBox 360 will match Kill Zone 2 graphics.

Last generation XBox had the the best console graphics and Far Cry or Ninja Gaiden Black were two of the games that had the best graphics of last console generation. No PS2 game touched Far Cry or Ninja Gaiden Black's graphics last generation.
