Forums - Sony Discussion - Is the ps3 graphically moving ahead to fast? let's have a debate.

Killzone 2 best graphics in a console game this generation. No future console game will come close to matching the realistic graphics that are in Killzone 2. PS3 is the strongest graphics console this generation. No XBox 360 will match Kill Zone 2 graphics.

Last generation XBox had the the best console graphics and Far Cry or Ninja Gaiden Black were two of the games that had the best graphics of last console generation. No PS2 game touched Far Cry or Ninja Gaiden Black's graphics last generation.

I disagree with this, because "diminishing returns" is always relative. Now, I don't discount the fact that we do oftentimes place too much emphasis on graphics, but every generation shows advances that are easily distinguishable from the generation before. Every step of the way over the past 15 years, I've bought the latest technology thinking, 'Damn, could the graphics EVER get any better than THIS!"

Yup, they always do, usually in six to twelve months! I particularly remember being floored by the "realism" of Madden 2001 when the PS2 launched. Game doesn't look so hot anymore.

Ten years from now systems will be able to render so much more architecturally, and I think facial animations especially will improve to such a huge degree, that the tech will make Killzone 2 look silly. Wash. Rinse. Repeat ten years after that, and then ten years after THAT ... etc ...

Diminishing returns for the widest general public. As in with each generation the advances are less and less noticeable to, say, my mom.

Not for me and you, because let's face it, we're graphic geeks :)

But just look at it this way: if you took the best looking PS1 games and played them during the PS2 lifespan, they looked downright ugly. I do still enjoy my share of great PS1 games nowadays, but their 3d graphics hasn't aged well.

Now you take really good looking PS2 games and play them today. You don't really see that stark contrast, and they are aging much better... I think you will still be able to play GOWII in 5 years, 8 years after its debut, and enjoy it without thinking during the action "this is good... if only it looked decent". Sadly, that isnt true of, say, my beloved MGS.

In the future the games that today look really good will have an even longer lifespan. There will be games looking better than KZ2 on the current gen consoles and even more on the next-gen, but we will still be able to play KZ2 in 7-8 years and think it looks good. As a proof: it looks great if you compare it with PC games, and PC graphics is usually 2-3 years ahead :)

this guy is good at making threads i wish i could be the same

any way yea i think they are moving fast they need to slowdown the graphics and speed up the gameplay elements some games have very nice graphics but with a dated gameplay they mean nothing

I want to ask is the ps3 moving ahead graphically too fast for it's competition and what does the competition have up its sleeve, lets have a sensible debate/discussion.

Yes. The development of PS3 grafix is moving faster than the speed of light.

The competition was left behind ages ago and the difference is staggering. All PS3 games look light years better than the competition in every possible way.

Well the PS3 has been playing catch-up on the multi-platforms. You can go to gamespot for comparisons. As for the exclusives, it also depends a little on development time and the engine they are using. KZ2 has an engine that's optimized for the PS3 so it's one of the games that can get the best out of the system.

GeOW2 is simply unreal engine (same engine used for Mirror's Edge, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe etc.) and that engine i think has reached its limit with GeOW2, but that does not mean the X360 has reached its limit, since they could always build an engine to bring the specific X360 features to life. Even though the X360 is basically a "dumb pc" like a midway dev said, they can still squeeze more out.

But basically the PS3 still has cell power left, but is really held back by the low bandwidth of the system. It took a LONG time for KZ2 to come out, same as most games that look great on the PS3. I think you are starting to see its power now because it takes a long time to develop for the PS3. It IS harder. That's a fact. One little proof of this is the Far Cry 2 port.. It took 3 people to port it from PC to X360, but 14 to port it from PC to PS3 in the same amount of time. That's almost 5 times as much..

I think any graphical difference between the PS3 and 360 will never be large enough for the majority of people to notice/care.

 This is my statements exactly

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. I love gaming on the cutting edge and refuse to accept any compromises. Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. Long Live SHIO!!!!

This.

4 ≈ One

Nothing is ever too fast, if I had it my way I'd required everyone to buy new, better, faster, more powerful, nicer everything all the time to keep progress going.

What I've learned the hard way is that screenshots and videos from the internet almost always look better than the actual product looks running on my console. It's funny how that works. I use my PS3 to watch an online video about a PS3 game on my HDTV, and it looks better than the actual game running on the same TV!!

thats strange because for me they always look better on my screen when running on my ps3.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Well I have played and finished these games

Uncharted
MGS4
Gears

and to tell you I can see the graphical differences between these games but the differences aren't that big enought like Wii game vs ps3 but I can deffinitly see the difference.
