Forums - Microsoft Discussion - repairing a broken 360

Anyone know how? Anyone have any tips? My friend's 360 broke like a year ago and he replaced it. Never did anything with the broken console, so I asked if I could have it. What games should I get if I can fix it?

Also is it okay to get used games? I heard a lot of used 360 games are fucked up so much that they wont play. I don't wanna be ripped off.

Call Microsoft, I don't know what kind of costs you'd be looking at, but they'd be able to fix it for you. It'd most likely be cheaper than buying the console anyways.

No I was going to fix it myself lol. If you can do something, its always cheaper to do it yourself then have someone else do it. I also heard microsoft wont fix 360s that are out of warranty, Not even for money. I am not sure if this is true, and I believe my friends is past that date.

Normally I would agree with you, but if the console RRoD'ed, then you are pretty much can't fix it yourself. By the time you bought the parts and tools (if you didn't have them) it would cost more than having Microsoft fix them.

From my understanding of RRoD, the board heated up so much that the X-clamps pulled the chip right off the board. You could take the heatsink off, resolder the chip (very unlikely to work properly) and then mount a few new heatsinks and hope it works, but odds are it won't.

Just give Microsoft a call and see how much it costs, or if they'll even cover it. It would only take like 10 minutes.

@used games question

I would only buy used 360 games from a store with a return policy. EBGames/Gamestop have a policy where if a used game is scratched and doens't work, you can return it within 7 days (or something similar to that) but check out the policy first. As for buying online, with amazon, they have a gurantee that may cover defective products from 3rd parties. I do know if they don't ship it to you, amazon will refund you no questions asked.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Well there are a few tricks to fix a RROD system, but I'm not familiar with any of them. The only one that I can remember right now is the wet towel trick, but I'm not even sure how that works.

this works by heating up the system enough to resolder the connections. Sometimes you get lucky, and the solder goes back where it belongs, and the system starts working again. however, since it is not soldered properly, it will fail shortly after.

I saw a few different things on google about fixing a RRoDed 360. One was just putting less tension on the X clamps(lol the xbox uses X clamps)Another said just adding a better heat solution thingy would work. I figured I would see here.
