How can a system that was severely outclassed in its own generation be the best ever?

Disagree, PS3 60GB is the best system ever, it has the biggest game library at its disposal.

PS1 Games + PS2 Games + PS3 Games = The Best Selection

^This.

Although i personally would have just said the PS2 because of its sales

ps2 is best console ever made

So we're counting platforms that can play SNES games + others?

In that case my PC owns all of them hands down. NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, N64, old DOS games, huge library of PC games.

....but not counting my PC, I'd say the SNES is my favorite.

You've confused the dedicated gamer with the mainstream gamer, WoW. While it is true that Sega's marketing campaigns with the Genesis were drawing away some of the dedicated gamers, a great deal more looked at the Genesis and saw the same thing they later saw with the SNES: a totally unnecessary upgrade.

Fun bit of history: the SNES was going to be backwards-compatible with NES games to help appease the people who saw no reason to upgrade consoles. It never happened, however, and the closest we ever came to NES BC was Super Mario All-Stars and a few other ports of NES games to SNES.

Make no mistake, Sega's marketing campaigns were drawing everyone in.  The Genesis' was quite possibly one of the best marketing campaigns a video game console has ever seen.  Nintendo had a full blown monopoly at the time.  They dictated terms to stores at the height of the NES' popularity.  Sega went up against that and tore Nintendo's monopoly status a new one for those first few years.  People of the time saw the Sega as the step past Nintendo's NES and Nintendo saw it too.  Arguing otherwise is silly.

As for the SNES having BC, I'm aware that a pin converter will give you that effect but I was under the impression that was merely a side-effect of using similar chips in carts.  If you have a link with information on that, I would be happy to read it.
