Forums - Sony Discussion - A personal investigation into the varying models of the PS3

Warhawk and Killzone2 are fine on my 60GB Launch model. Well with Warhawk I got disconnected with Wifi and it froze but when I switched to lan I didn't have any more problems. Edit: My setup is a 20'' computer monitor with a VGA box through component at 720p 60Hz and I use wireless controllers with out any lag.

I've got the US 60GB model. The only problems I've had with it are occasional freezing during Assassin's Creed and while I'm on the web.

I'm beginning to wonder if what I am seeing and what is on that youtube video is actually on every game regardless, but only a few people actually notice it even when looking closely. Perhaps only a few people take that as lag, and it may just be the animation taking a while, but still it is a delayed animation. I really need to check my 2 friends that have 20GB and 60GB launch consoles to see if I notice it on those.

That doesn't make sense because the models are exactly the same when it comes to playing Ps3 games. The new 80gb lacks backwards compatabilty, the 2 extra USB slot and the sd card slot.

The 40gb models are identical to the 80gb new models and the old 80gb MGS B/C model. The old 60gb and 20gb models had a 95nm chip while the 40/and both 80s have a 65nm chip and their power consumption reduced. Their fans run slower, but when playing long periods the fan will get louder then a 60gb or 20gb model.

You can't single the 40gb system out because it's almost identical to a few other models. It has a smaller HD, that must be whats causing lag in all games??

No it's just your imagination.

So in conclusion if theres a problem with the 20gb model theres a problem with the 60gb. If theres an issue with the 40, theres an issue with both 80gb.

As I said, perhaps this perceived lag in at least Killzone 2 is just that.  Some people see it, some don't.  Just like that one person watched the youtube video and saw nothing wrong, while me and others watch it and see the delay between button press and actual fire animation.

Since it could be an object of perception, I will try to get ahold of a few different models just to confirm this.  If it is just perception I should notice this perceived lag on both the launch consoles as well as any newer versions.

Also, we do not know the minor revisions Sony did for the 40GB model.  It is not a factual statement to say it is identical to the 80GB BC and new 80GB except for hard drive, because Sony could very well have changed a few other small things to save some money as Squilliam pointed out earlier.  If, however, the 40GB really, officially, is identical to the 80GB models, then again, this must just be a perception issue after all.  I just assumed everyone could notice it, but if you watch that youtube video and don't notice it, you aren't going to notice it in game either so perhaps the issue is simply that some people do not pay close enough attention to such a minor thing to notice, or they simply think it is a perfectly normal animation delay.

Either way, I shall know soon enough because I will test my theory on a 20GB launch model by the end of the week.

Motorstorm 80GB [same as the MGS4 bundle]. No Lag.

4 ≈ One

I own a ps3 60 gig. I havent noticed any lag on my kz2

Launch 60GB PAL PS3 (with 250GB 5400rpm HDD)
SONY Bavia 1080p LCD
Using HDMI, Audio through Optical out
Controllers used in bluetooth mode, not plugged in
No noticable slow-down or ignored "flicks" on KZ2, except during load screens for about a second or so
Using the PS3 for upscaling, not the TV where possible
No noticable problems with other games, although I did have a Fallout 3 crash or two, and Bioshock sometimes took about 2 or so seconds to load some textures when starting from a reloaded save, but largely unnoticeable

In a nutshell, if you are experiencing the severe delay in Killzone 2, try checking your PS3 video config and toggling Cross Color Reduction Filter from On to Off, or vice versa if it is already Off. If that doesn't fix your perceived input delay, try forcing the PS3s output to 720 if its going to 1080 for whatever reason.

Some people are also reporting that changing the CCRF also changes the gamma of the system, and may fix the gamma slider at the launch menu if you have trouble seeing the Helghast symbol at both ends of the spectrum.
