Forums - Microsoft Discussion - I repeat... Griffball is why Halo 3 is king of the FPS!

Between all UTS there are probably thousands of little to extensive mods. Saying halo 3 is the best because of 1 mod and some bored guys making a story is really silly. I used to do that stuff in socom with my friends. Does that mean socom 2 is the be all end all of third person shooters?

I speaking of CONSOLES here.  Care to explain how extensive the use of UT3 is in the console community?  Is the community heavily into playing a bunch of modes like they do with Halo 3?

And the "some bored guys make a story" is one of the most AMAZING understatements I have seen.  The reality is that the Red vs Blue is not just "some board guys make a story".  It is part of a large Halo community that enabled it to be supported.  Red vs Blue is far more popular than their other series.  That is because it of the Halo community.  The size of the community results in something that is a throw away line "Griffball" becoming an actual new game mode.

Being king isn't just having superior specs.  It depends on the size of the community and the reputation of the game.  And, as Halo 3 shows with Griffball, this being the top console FPS isn't close to being challenged.

Funny thing is, everyone I know thinks halo is highly over rated. Even people who do like and own halo1/2/3 think its over rated. Ever hear someone say UT is over rated? I haven't :] Halo isn't king. There is no king.

Halo is the TOP console FPS franchise.  It obtained this by being the first console FPS during the XBox/PS2 era to be able to get FPS right, and execute.  Add Microsoft. marketing and it put itself in the console version of Madden football, as the top football franchise.  Top franchise = King in this context.

And no one says UT is "overrated" because not too many people pay attention to it on consoles.  It didn't do much at all on the PS3, even with its theoretical modding capabilities that were supposed to shine through.

Halo is so overrated that it is still at the top of Xbox Live after two years. Halo 3 has longevity value.

You don't get it do you? The masses will take whatever you feed them as fact. Look at haze. Before it came out lots of people hyped it up. One review for it was bad and then everyone hated it without even playing it.

Look at halo, microsoft and a few pin heads were like "zomg this is the best game, evaR!" People decided to get it. Wasted their money and convinced themselves that it was amazing and clearly the best game ever.

People are sheep. My friend pre ordered killzone 2, was waiting for it so greatly. One of her friends said the demo sucked, so she canceled her preorder.

If someone in power tells you what is good or what isn't, then you will believe them.

I shall call this the halo effect from now on. :]

So you are saying that the 300,000 people playing halo 3 a year and a half later, are playing because of hype?

Hype is usually to create or influence demand before a game or event comes out to increase sales potential. Proof of value shows how long the value actually lasts. Halo 3 has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt it's value despite peoples random bitching. Halo 3 sold a million copies last year. By the end of this gen Halo 3 will have 11-12 m copies sold. I have no idea what you are still calling hype. The games been out two years...the hype no longer exists.

What about 800,000 people playing starcraft over 10 years after it came out. Thats impressive 300,000 people of 9 million who bought it really is crap for a game with "lasting power"

Where did I say there was still halo hype? People buy halo because they are told to. It is that simple.

LOL. People would play a game continuosly for 1.5 years, not because they enjoy the game, but because some outside force drives them to do it. That is the weakest argument aganst HaLo popularity I have yet heard.

Also, 750,000 people play Halo 3 on a daily basis, with 300,000 on at a given time.

Link to the Starcraft numbers you just dropped. Not saying it does not happen, but should provide some linkage. Go to bungie.net for Halo 3 numbers.
