Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Should Nintendo drop the price?

I'm talking about the Wii here. I know a lot of people say they should not drop the price because they are still selling like crazy. I'll actually post a different view on this situation. Please comment arguing on my view of this situation.

MY VIEW:

The Wii is surfing on the blue ocean and capturing a new market of gamers that do not care for the games that are on the ps3 or the xbox360. Since they don't care for such games, they will not buy such games when they come to the wii. My complaint is not that they buy the console, they actually should.

My complaint about the price of the console is for the gamers that care for the games that are on the 360 and the ps3. The gaming industry is very reliant on these games and the three consoles have a good library of them. Now, when such a gamer looks at the three consoles, each has a nice library of games... so why not choose the cheapest one? In this case, the xbox360. If this happens very often, the wii userbase will be more heavily represented by the purely casual crowd. Note that this will not be noticed by the sale of Wii consoles, as the gamers that don't care for games in the 360 and ps3 will still be eating it up.

How is this a problem for nintendo? Well, they still care about the non-purely casual gamer (at least they say they do). If they are not well represented on the Wii, then third-parties will not see their games sell as well as with the other consoles and there will be less of an investment in such games for the wii.

This pricing can be good for them now for profit, but it can actually bite them in the ass later on in the road and they should think about the future and not just on the now. What do you guys think?

In japan, yes a 50€ (well in yen) would be welcome over there. But in the west, hell no! Well, they could do it, cause a wii only costs 70€ to produce so ...

You should actually read what I wrote. :P

If you did read it, why is my argument not right?

Ok I've read and yeah that's pretty interresting, but I don't agree:

- The price of the console is pretty cheap for "real gamers". We can easily invest in a 250€ console if that's what we want. It may be "expensive" for casual gamers, but not for pure gamers. So I don't think a 200€ would appeal more to gamers.
- Lack of non-nintendo core games or multiplat inferior version: "Real" third party multiplat are often not really good on wii: TRU, Dead rising, call of duty ...
- Wii-mote: believe it or not, but everybody doesn't love it. Many people just want a traditional pad for playing games.
- Graphics: some people may find it to "hard" to come back to SD graphics after playing in HD.

Well, I'm a PS3 player and I don't want to buy a wii because of what I've wrote over there. But, I could buy it when it will be almost dead and very cheap (99€) to play some good shooters. Wii has a lot of them, and they look pretty nice.

no its killing the HD's ATM dont' worry bout japan the HDs just got bundles for this week and the next im sure wii can pick it up there wen some SW comes out

I agree with Tremble on a price cut in Japan certainly.

...My argument against a price cut RIGHT NOW, versus down the road is before Nintendo does any kinda price cut, I think they need to make damn sure they can keep the supply channel full.

Because being unable to find a Wii when you want one can be a deterrent eventually...

I think in the west, Nintendo can look purely at sales and say "We don't need a price cut." They may take you argument into consideration but i don't think it would change anything. In Japan though i think it's a completely different story. They need a price cut there drastically.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

I was thinking a price cut for Japan not cause the HD consoles sold well from software recently...I think that will come this year in Japan for the Wii, I think a price cut is needed to jumpstart the whole industry there. I think a cut across all platforms is needed actually.

A price drop will not currently increate Nintendo's sales. It cannot, because not even Nintendo can sell a Wii that hasn't yet been built. It would probably increase demand, but to do so when they cannot increase supply would be tantamount to engineering an artificial shortage, and that's one game Nintendo doesn't play.

Nintendo will drop the price when the time is right. Now is not that time.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

wii only needs a price cut in Japan. The x360 actually beat it last week
