Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Isn't Sure About The PS3's LifeSpan - 8 to 10 years

http://www.neoseeker.com/news/9976-sony-reduces-ps3-lifespan-estimate/

Though maintaining even as recently as a month ago the PlayStation 3 would have a ten-year lifespan, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss David Reeves has expressed uncertainty on that front in an upcoming interview with Play magazine.

"The competition will have new models on the market by the end of the PS3," he commented. "I have no doubt and we’ll have to be fast on our feet.....I don’t know whether the PS3 lifespan will be eight, nine or ten years."

He noted PlayStation 4 is not as of now "on the horizon".

Sony stated two weeks ago their current console is "inherently future-proof", and would surely outlast the PS2, which is now going eight years strong.

The article's title is actually "Sony reduces PS3's Lifespan Estimate", but I find that its not accurate since Reeves is saying it could still last 10 years.

As much as I believe the Sony 10 year plan is BS, I thought it was generally accepted that Sony Europe is like the crazy cousin meant to be ignored?

Most likely cause of how weak the PS3 has been doing compared to the competition....Sony thought PS3 would come out and every PS2 owner would flock to buy one......they were DEAD WRONG.

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

Cool.

Maybe that insanity bug that was going around their corporate headquarters is finally starting to wear off.

there is no winning for sony this gen until the fat lady sings. if they stick by their guns and say 10 years they get criticised, if they say it MAY not be 10years, but maybe 8-10, they get criticised. its best if they shut up and only speak once they start proving the critics wrong. that should slow down the dooms day critics.

10 years seems unlikely. It will be interesting to see what Sony does in a couple of years.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Now I know why you call yourself Words of Wisdom.

The PS2 was only 6 years before it was replaced. It would have been 5 if they didnt have delays.

PS4 will come out when PS3 software shipments start to dry up. That probably won't happen for at least 2.5 years.

Yet I can still go buy one new and there are still new games coming out for it.  So they still support it, even though it's 9 years old.  It's life is not even remotely over yet, and won't be for awhile, despite the successor being on the market for a couple of years now.
