This thread will track the best games throughout 2009 for each of the major, current gaming platforms. It will list games with a Metacritic score of 85%+ (with at least 10 reviews) released throughout 2009, and should provide a broad guide for those looking to compare the best exclusives and non-exclusives as determined by the critics. The thread will be updated at the end of each month. If any games are missing, wrongly listed, or just incorrect, please drop a post explaining the problem.

Yay, PS3 is winning!

Anyway, on PS3, Killzone 2, inFamous, Heavy Rain, MAG, Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank 3, and God of War III if it releases, will make the list. Not too knowledgeable about other platforms, but The Conduit, MadWorld, Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2, Halo 3 ODST and Forza 3 should be on there, amongst others.

On the whole PS3-is-currently-winning front, which platform does everyone think will be ahead at the end of the year? PS3 is looking strong if you believe the media, but there may be all manner of possible exclusives hiding behind the scenes, and the PC line-up for the year looks pretty awesome.

I don't think it's too early, the first big games are already pouring in. Also, it will be easier to update this thread one game at a time, rather than start a massive thread with a big list of twenty or so halfway through the year. Lastly, it'll be fun to see how the thread develops as the year progresses.

Also, as an aside, I've just edited in a bunch of links to the pages for the various games on this site, and added the non-exclusives as well.

That's links to the relevant Metacritic-page added to every game as well (click the metascore number, or, for non-exclusives, the listed % score) -- the game title will take you to the relevant game-page on this site so you can check estimated sales and what not (if they are listed).

I really hope you keep upto date with this thread, because I think it's a great idea.

But the format you're currently using (the metacritic score bit and box art) will mean you'll run out of space in OP in about 6 months, probably should have reserved 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th posts for each respective company (and PC)

I fully intend to update it. I've been coming here almost daily for a couple of years or so, and I can't see that changing in a hurry (it's a good place to drop by when I'm avoiding working on my deadlines), so I see no reason why I can't keep this up-to-date with relative ease.

And, yes, the format could become an issue as the year progresses, but I'll just edit the OP as required to ensure all the information can fit in and still be easily accessed. If that ends up being too sprawling, I can always edit the second post as well (which I purposefully placed there, just in case), and spread the OP over two posts.

Oh, and lastly, thanks, I'm glad you think it's a good idea. I figured it would be of use as I see many people here claiming one platform or another is obviously far better in regards the games released, but few actually back up there claims with anything bar deeply subjective views. This seems to be a fair way to look at the best of the current year's games and to loosely measure each platform against each other as the year progresses. I think it should be an interesting little list, and I'm pretty keen to see how it all pans out.
