Sony respond to 'PlayStation disease'
Wednesday 25-Feb-2009 10:31 AM Defensive over claims of skin condition caused by gaming
Sony has defended its position following reports yesterday that doctors had officially named a new gaming-linked skin disorder PlayStation palmar hidradenitis.
As reported yesterday, the condition, which symptoms include sore red lumps on a patient's hands, has been so named in the British Journal of Dermatology.
Sony has responded: "We firmly believe that video gaming is a legitimate entertainment pastime like watching movies, listening to music, or reading books. As with any leisure pursuit there are possible consequences of not following common sense, health advice and guidelines, as can be found within our instruction manuals."
It went on: "PlayStation was launched in 1995 and has sold hundreds of millions of consoles over the last 13 years. We would not wish to belittle this research and we will study the findings with interest, but this is the first time we have ever heard of a complaint of this nature."
A 10-year-old girl diagnosed with the new condition by doctors at the Geneva University Hospital recovered after ten days without playing games. Because you'd need a doctor to tell you that.
