Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should I give Xenogears a Try?

Okay I have to admit something. I only started playing RPG's during the End of/Beginning of the PS1/PS2 era. At the time the only games I even gave a chance to were Final Fantasy VII and VIII (IX didnt appeal to me because Zidane didnt seem like a cool Character and the story seemed kind of Lackluster.) I only started to try RPG's outside of the Final Fantasy brand about 4 years ago during my freshman year of High School with Kingdom Hearts and Legend of Dragoon. Recently a thread asking about the greatest RPG character of all time appeared and Many stated Fei Fong Wong? From Xenogears. So my question to you is Should I give Xenogears a try? Hows the battle system? Hows the story? are the rumors about it being an incomplete game true? does it take away from the experience? How is it related to Xenosaga if its made by two completely different companies? and Do you love more then any FFY (Y is the next best variable to X but since FFX=Final Fantasy X I avoided it so you wouldnt be confused). I can apparently get both Xenogears and Vargant Story for 100.00 is it worth it? PS.: What are some thoughts on Legend of Legaia? and Lunar Story

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Xenogears is better than all the PS era FF games except FFviii. You should definitely give it a shot. It's quite expensive now though.

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

try FFIX, zidane is really amazing you shouldn't judge him by only appearance. and xenogears is really good you should also play it

So Im guessing the 100 bucks for Vagrant Story and Xenogears is completely worth tehn?

IMO, both of those games shouldn't be missed. $100 seems a little steep though. I think I got them both for about $75 CAD.

XENOGEARS IS THE GREATEST RPG OF ALL TIME PERIOD.

Check out this video on the combat system, ITS FREAKING EPIC.

This game has the best story you will ever see in any rpg and has the best music and the most complex character EVER.

HELL YES. Xenogears is still to this day my favorite RPG of all time.

Yes.

Xenogears is a decent game. It could have been one of the best of all time, but it suffers from a few deep flaws.

The story is amazing, and the battle system is creative and was very innovative for its time (and perhaps even still). Unfortunately, the rumors of it being an incomplete game are true: they ran out of money shortly after finishing Disc 1, and so Disc 2 attempts to finish up the story with many hours of cutscenes but maybe 3-4 hours of gameplay total on that disc. Some theorize that the demand for cutscene-skip really got started because this game lacked it, and often featured long cutscenes before boss fights, leading to what some refer to as "Xenogears Penalty Mode": if you lost a boss fight you'd have to sit through the cutscene again before you could try again.

Xenogears' relationship to Xenosaga is a strange one. Xenogears was originally made to be the fifth game in a series, but none of the others were ever made; Square-Enix cancelled the project after the first game. The people who worked on the project left Square-Enix to form their own company, but they couldn't truly continue the series since Square-Enix still owned the IP, so they started work on a Xenogears-like series that became Xenosaga.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Yes. Nuff' said.

Pick up Vagrant Story as well. The storyline was awesome in my opinion. Only problem was that the series was canned afterwards. So sad.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.
