where is the wii connection? o_O

From what I'm reading, it seems this technology can be used like wiimote

You have no idea what the Z-Cam is, do you? You just couldn't wait to post something with the words "better than Wii" in the title.

For anyone interested, here's a demo of the Z-Cam from one of the Consumer Electronic Shows. Crappy video, but it gets the point across.

wow, thanks for the video.  This stuff is pretty cool.

Another video on this post - "this is better than wii".

I'm not knocking wii at all - but this thing is better for boxing games - don't have to hold any controllers.

Wow, that boxing game looks pretty sweet.

Yup it does look good, XBOX 720 with XBOXING confirmed, then a day or two after release the fans will complain that they can't play Gears or Halo anymore - Microsoft will release a classic controller that is half baked and fans will shun them.

Microsoft would have to have this camera used like the sensor bar for standard games and Nintendo would have a superior controller. This is cool but where is it's range?

it works better than Wii now, not better than Wii motion plus i guess

also, i don't think core gamers will be very interested as they hate the Wii controller, and i'm sure Nintendo is preparing something similar for their next console

also, i don't think it can increase sales, Xbox360 was not designed for this but also, it's mainly for casuals, and Xbox360 has very few casual games

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

It does look interesting. Still, I can't see removing traditional controllers entirely being a good thing, there's only so many different kinds of input you can do with body gestures.

Besides, it's a lilttle foolish to compare this to Wii Sports' Boxing of all things. Yeah, maybe it is better than Boxing (the sport many feel is the weakest of the bunch). How about Tennis, Baseball and Bowling? You need to hold onto something, else it wouldn't feel natural, correct? How would you play Mario Kart Wii with this thing? Or, if that's not possible, then what would be the next Mario Kart Wii?

Basically, I don't think the camera alone is enough, you still need a physical remote for most games. If it doesn't cost so much I can see it being a worthy addition to next-gen consoles though.

edit: I also wonder how convinient this camera is, can it view a wide enough area to get the whole living room? Can it correctly determine which person is which in local multiplayer games? I imagine there has to be some technical difficulties.

I saw the boxing demo in last year's GDC. The camera had to be located somewhere low and looking upward the player at around 45 degrees upward so that it can both detect your x position and z changes (your hands moving forward).

I think that the usual problems with camera based motion controls will persist. With the EyeToy, for example, I had to place the cam at a particular angle and you move away until you fit into the game's character silhouette (which changes from game to game). It's really odd because I had to adjust the angle so I come close to the camera, then move away until I fit in the outline again. You do this over and over until you make the perfect fit.

And it gets worse when you have other players (a la hotseat), which is inevitable with EyeToy games because it's not fun playing alone. My young son, smaller than me, had to do the calibration process all over again on his turn.

They can fix it if they develop a camera that automatically rotates and zooms whenever it detects a face pattern. Maybe it's also possible to detect groups of people, and you select a player by waving your hand quickly over your face (a quick detect-undetect say 3 times will activate player selection). It can be coupled with a camera friendly controller like Sony's patented "Ball" controller.

Wow. I didn't think this new camera accessory was half bad, but your post just really tore it to shreads. :P I hadn't thought of any of that, but I completely agree.

This is the one using ultrasonic tech, right?

Looks a little more comparable to eyetoy than Wiimote. I wonder if it can detect orientation effectively...
