Forums - Nintendo Discussion - PS2 is the wii's biggest enemy, and wii is the PS2 biggest helper...

The 360 and PS3 get destroyed by the wii in sales, and neither seem capable of slowing it down, let alone beating it. However I think the most damaging console to the wii seems to be the PS2. Not because of outright sales, or direct competition mind you. But rather because of 3rd parties still sticking with whatever is most profitable. The userbase is too small on the PS3, so what do they do? Make Ps3/360 games to reach the largest audience. The wii is a bit underpowered for most of those ports. However, still in attempt to reach the largest audience third parties make PS2/wii games. Now this wouldn't be so damaging except they make them PS2 games and port them to the wii rather than the other way around. Games like Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl show that the wii is indeed a next gen system. The level of detail on Brawl would not be possible on any last gen system, the lighting effect, incredible draw distance, and detailed models at a silky 60fps in metroid wouldn't be possible on a next gen system. I don't even have to go into Mario. But in order to reach the largest audience developers are making games for the PS2, that can be ported to the wii and slap some waggle onto it. Few of them are making wii games from the ground up that actually take advantage of the wii's hardware. At this rate I wonder how long it will take for the PS2 to actually fall behind the PS3 and 360, and finally die out. And when or if with the PS2 longevity (thanks to the wii) developers will actually start making games from the ground up for the wii, or just continue to try and cash in on the largest userbase. Thoughts?

The ps2 will not die out my friend, HUGE rpg's are being released on the ps2 as we speak, I mean if those games were to be out earlier in time the ps2 might have sold even better than it did. Now you know how it feels to get a port from a weaker system.

Anybody that's not Leo-J have a response?

I don't think that this is a problem for the Wii. It is a little annoying that a lot of games are not as polished as they could be on the wii, but that's it.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

Yeah, I feel this as well. The biggest problem with Madden 09, it is a PS2 port. Which actually pisses me off. I have also played the 360 version and don't see any reason why the Wii couldn't do anything I saw. I think EA is just a problem. Ubisoft is much better, at least they build some games ground up.

One thing to think about though, is as soon as the PS2 dies off, the Wii will have the biggest userbase and will get most of the original builds and thus 360/ps3 will get the ports. Just like last gen when PS2 got all of the initial development and the more powerful xbox/gc had all the ports.

I sure as hell hope Madden *09* won't be a PS2 port :)

It's sad, hooooooo sad, but true.

The PS2 still get 4th times more games than the other actualy.

Yea, Wii get PS2 port, like GC and Xbox got PS2 port :-/

sooooooooooooo sad

Ureshikunai yo, kono yaro~~

In Japan the PS2 is on its last legs as it was initially critically wounded by the Nintendo DS and the Wii has rubbed salt in the wound. In North America the PS2 is still alive and kickin' and that will likely last until the initial round of price-cuts to the Wii where the PS2 will stop being the only affordable console to a lot of people; the second round of price cuts will likely be the one that puts the nail in the PS2's coffin.

Depends a lot on the market, PS2 might have good numbers in USA and EU but it is more or less dead now in Japan. The weekly sales for PS2 is going down and will probarbly sell less than 10k a week early next year. This means that, if nothing happens for the PS3, that Japan has two valid plattforms next year; DS and Wii.

So why is this important? Because Wii:s main 3rd party support will most probarbly come from Japan in 1-2 years.

I will also say that Wii actualy is helped a little bit by PS2 because it will generate a lot of showelware now early one to fill up the shelves, something that aactualy is needed because of the crap 3rd party support that was availble from the start.

Somehow I doubt the PS2 is going to dissapear as soon as you think.

Did you know the PS1 only ceased production last year? It first appeared in 1994 so It had a full 11 year life span.
