Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why did the Gamecube fail???

competition from the ps2, and it did not appeal to the gaming world quite as much as previous consoles. i loved it, but i can see why people wouldn't

And thinking about it, the foundating GameCube tech still lives on within the Wii which sold very well. The Wii is many ways a slimline GameCube+ together with a new control scheme.

i agree. and it literally lives on in the software...metroid, resident evil, donkey konga, pikmin, and others are gc games ported over to the wii... and they are selling as well as or better than new games on any current system!! and if i may say, these games look and play well enough to stand up to any current-gen game.

It's based on the gamecube tech but more powerful upgrade.

IE similar architecture but more power.

Gamecube didn't fail us.

We failed Gamecube.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

From my 7 years of owning the little but powerfull cube (and by powerfull I mean first party and its hardware) The Game Cube failed to garner a huge uberbase for manny reasons. It all goes back to its low third party support and vice versa.

Even though it used a more effcient disc, it didnt provide the 8.5 gigs of space the PS2 had; not to mention the DVD playback which was a huge thing back then since the format was still young.

The strong line up of first anf second party titles contributed to its low third party support since dev were so scared that their games were going to be crushed by nintendos own titles success.

They originaly planned to release it in 2000 but they decided to delay it for fine tuning. If I recall, they announced it 1999.

Because they had put a strain on their friendships with big companies like Square they lost exclusive games. If it wasnt for Mr. Iwata patching things up with them and others, we wouldn't have any gamess from them at all

People labled it as kiddy which irked me a lot so much. This left an impression on gamers saying it wasnt for core gamers and despite drawbacks from the PS2's load times like its predecessor weak hardware, and pain in ass progaming it beat the GC and xbox.

Despite selling only a mear 21M, it made profit compared to the xbox that lost 4 billion; which would have severly hurt them. They're strictly a video game company.

The GameCube failed because Sony was able to go unchallenged for nearly two years building up a strong user base and irreversable momentum. As many said DVD played a major role in building the PlayStation empire. Lets also remember that Nintendo64 failed to kill the PSOne, thus PS2 had momentum by default (Having lead the last generation)

But Nintendo didn't count GameCube as a failure. Nintendo still made millions upon millions of dollars off of software sales alone. I think as Rol said recently only once in the GameCube's life span did Nintendo actually have a loss and it was only like 30-million dollars barely anything opposed to Sony and Microsoft's expenditures.

In the end the GameCube was a success, it sold Nintendo's first party software and Nintendo has alway survived by selling software not hardware. Nintendo themselves at the launch of the Wii said they would be willing to handle 100% of the Wii's gaming, they didn't care if third parties would support the platform or not. That is just how strong Nintendo is, they make such good games that they will turn a profit with or without help from third parties!

I KNOW, I had one & hated the thing.....it almost made me turna way from gaming

AWFUL 3rd party support, 1st party games weren't great barring, Zelda:WW & SSBM......& yeah SMS was the worst 3D mario ever.

such a disappointment for me, I was a gamecube only owner for 90% of last gen, then got PS2 in 2006

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

To know why the Gamecube failed, you need to disect the Gamecube and Fail.

Fail has 4 letters. A square has 4 sides. So Fail is to letters, what square is to sides.

Fail^2 has 16 letters. 16/2=8, which is the number of vertices a Cube has. Also, it is the number of letters in Gamecube. Gamecube is also 2 words (Game + Cube) put together.

16th Letter in the alphabet is P. Playstation starts with P.

So there you have it. That is why Gamecube = Fail.

That's about as likely as me playing by somebody elses rules, which I would never do. I only play by my own rules, nobody elses...not even my own.

Not enough waggle, hardcore games or HD graphics, clearly.

I actually think that the biggest reason for lack of 3rd party support was mini-DVD. GameCube didn't get some big multiplatform games because they just didn't fit in mini-DVD (1.5gb space). That is less than UMD.
