Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why did the Gamecube fail???

I have never understood why the gamecube failed, fantastic graphics and price. REally cool looking console albiet a bit radical, Great launch lineup and original games. Good controller and gba connectivity. How did this system ever lose the last gen console war. It was in my honest opinion the greatest console ever. Any and all reasons or opinions are appreciated. And yes I do like the ps2 as well, but I didn't really like the xbox.

Comparably poor third party support(meaning fewer titles, and games are the biggest factor in every generation), momentum for the PS2 had built up better with a longer lead-up.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Nintendo's systems have dropped in total sales since the NES. The Gamecube was simply the low point. The reason for that is that Nintendo began to focus on making games for it's core consumers rather then expand it's userbase.

Nintendo could not compete with Sony head on. They had more factories, employees, assets, and could sell things at a lose. Little Nintendo could not do this, so Sony was able to run circles around Nintendo. This is why Nintendo changed the rules to where they have the advantage.

Unfortunately for the GameCube, it launched rather late and the PS2 really had a foothold. Also DVD playback was seen as a big deal and the GameCube didn't have it..

Another reason was poor third party support and it really didn't have the big system sellers like GTA, Halo, GT or SingStar.. It had many great exclusives but none which took off in the mainstream market.. If it had a really big system seller at launch then this generation would most likely look very different.

No DVD support, most people thought it was "kiddy", stuff like that. Nintendo didn't know how to expand its userbase, until now that is.

god i hate that nintendo kiddy stuff. It makes me very very angry. MAinly because it doesn't make any sence. It would be like calling puppy's kiddy just because there cute or kid like them.

The PS2 had 19 million in sales when the GC launched. That's almost as much as the GC sold lifetime. The developers and publishers already put all their support to it. The retail space had already put all their support into it. The consumers had already put 2 years of support into it.

Now imagine trying to compete against that.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

they were only making games for their core audience, and over the years, that core was shrinking due to people moving on to different systems, or just outright stopping playing video game all together.

come try out the computer game i've been working on for my high school senior project, titled sling ball. http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=47568

People fell for Sony's marketing hype last gen and they bought it. Then 3rd parties went where the largest user base was.

-UBISOFT BOYCOTT!-

- First problem is its a purple cube

- Way less 3rd party support then PS2

- Nothing innovative, just an upgrade from N64.

- Did not play DVD's like the PS2 or Xbox
