I really think reviewers are biased towards genres, which is a shame. This gen it's pretty much anti-JRPG for some reason (I guess linearity is all of a sudden a big no) while every other shooter gets big scores. That's ridiculous really. Genres should be treated more or less equally.

Lost Odyssey has a metacritic ranking of only 78, that's the 158th game on the 360 list.

I'm sorry to do this but how in the world did Persona 4, Valkyria Chronicles, and Tales of Vesperia get great scores?

And topic creator, just because someone doesn't think SO 4 is amazing and you think so (without even playing it) doesn't mean game reviewers are wrong.

Valkyria does have good scores. However the 81 for Vesperia (#102) is nothing special in a time where games like The Darkness, Marvel: UA, NFS: Most Wanted etc rank above it. It's clearly much harder for JRPGs to get good review scores. I'm not saying the OP is right about Star Ocean, it's just an observation that reviewers don't objectively score this genre. The IGN article about JRPGs comes to mind where they literally state that JRPG should evolve to WRPGs, while it's not the same genre at all. It's like saying that survival horror should evolve to 3rd person shooters (oh wait...).

Wow... did they really say that? That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard.

And by the way, survival horror meets 3rd person shooter is to me the worst blend of genres since... RPGs and FPSs.

This is what I was trying to say you stealer.

It seems to be much less about JRPGs getting shafted and simply about someone nitpicking about one or two RPGs they personally like not getting a bonkers score. It seems to me the more universally liked an RPG is, the better it's Meta is also.

This is true but there are exceptions to every rule. FF 12 comes to mind. (even though I love it, it's pretty even on the hate/love side)

I think a lot of the FF XII hate comes from it being a Final Fantasy. It's a double edged sword. On one hand, it's got an advantage with reviewers because of name value. On the other hand, it gets judged against other Final Fantasies and gets a backlash because of how different it was. Problems with the story and gameplay usually come down to "This is not what I'm used to".  In a nutshell, if this game was called Legends of Ivalice it would be more loved.

I do not hate Final Fantasy 12 Because it is not like the other final fantasy games.I hate it as a game itself. One of the biggest problems I had with that game it that the main character was not the main character at all.I'm mean what role does Vaan play in the game?Another reason why I hate it so much is because of how hard it is to get money in it.There are too many reasons why I hated that game. And about the star ocean thing, its not about that game alone its about alot of game.I just used Final Fantasy 12 and Star Ocean as an example (Although it may have been a bad example). If you actually read my post you would understand that I have had this problem with them for years.

I may read a lot of game reviews but some reviews are little bit harsh these days. They are a lot of games I think that should get a good rating and end up get a bad rating.

Er...no.

So reviewers give a high score to a game you hated, and one reviewer gives an average score to a game you like without ever having played it, and you are going to boycott all reviews?

Let's see. I hated Ninja Gaiden Sigma, it has an 87 on Metacritic, I quite enjoyed The Force Unleashed, which has a 70 on Metacritic, and I think Uncharted (with its 88 on Metacritic) is the second best PS3 exclusive.

Honestly, if you want a game enough, ignore the reviews (unless they're all under 5 or something), and go buy it. Reviews don't exist to give fan service (at least they shouldn't), but it's because of things like this that so many games get the scores people want them to get, that they don't deserve. Read: GTA4.

I just said that either I hated a game they gave a high score to and games they give a average score to I would listen to them but then later on maybe a couple months or years later when I played it I ended up loving it.Did you actually read my post?Yes I know Star Ocean was a bad example but if you actually read my post I have stated that I have had this problem for years with them.

man you guys are on my ass with this

People need to understand that just because you like a game doesn't make it great. Reviews are technical. Is the game technically sound in every area? That's what it amounts to. How many JRPG's have you all played this generation that are master pieces in graphics, story, gameplay, visuals, value, sound, presentation ect? There honestly haven't been any outside of handhelds. I think the best all-around JRPG so far is Tales of Vesperia, and I completely agree with it's 83% score on Gamerankings.com. The game left a lot to be desired and could have been a lot better with better writing, storytelling, and deeper character development.

Every thing should effect the score these games are being given. What Vesperia is lacking, for example, can't just be ignored because of how fun the game is or how cool the characters are, thus it only gets a solid score instead of a great one. Games like Lost Odyssey, despite having strong characters and good storytelling, suffered from dated gameplay mechanics and technical issues.

All of the JRPG's have had their obvious flaws. I don't see what people are complaining about. The thing I'm having a problem with is how high reviewers are scoring games.

Tales Of Vesperia has a 84% in Gamerankings.com.But to me I loved TOV's writing it was just a little rushed. But for a game that got released only one week after it got released in Japan it did a great job.And I loved the storytelling,It played like an anime with arcs. But some characters could have been better with a little more character development.

im a reviewer :(

Slightly off topic but I think the lowest and highest review scores on metacritic should be thrown out. It seems like a fad is developing among reviewers competing for web cred and site hits. The more controversy the better so decent games will get one 3.5 and even the best will have some idiot giving them a 6. This skews metascore downward as one revew 35 base points below avg. has the same effect as 35 reviews .1 point over! Oh never mind.

Imho stay away from sites you never heard of and find a reviewer that you trust.

Huh? Are you referring to Deus Ex with that comment? That game is supposed to be fantastic.

@g-value-I wasn't talking about you specifically with my FF XII comments. They were directed in a more general sense because I have noticed a lot of complaints coming down to how different it was in comparison to other Final Fantasies, which is stupid since every FF is supposed to be different.
