Forums - Gaming Discussion - This generation the worst for JRPG?

This is also including the PSP and DS which is just full of remakes, do you think this generation is the worst you have seen for JRPG?

For me it is a big fat YES, started gaming with the PS1 where JRPG were aplently on systems that generation. Then there was the generation with the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox where JRPG were once again aplenty along with handhelds. This generation however has been awful for JRPG, people are saying the genre is dying but to me it is more due to no good JRPG releasing this gen.

PSP, DS and 360 had all released by 2005 so it has been a full 3 years, in that time the past 2 generations already had some spectacular JRPG but this generation the best we have is a DQ remake........*shudders* Indeed this thread is a bitch rant but really cannot blame anyone expect the lack of good JRPG. :(

Fingers crossed DQ IX will release in summer, FFXIII early next year and then quickly after that we get Versus, Agito and DQ X but with all honestly I dont see the latter games coming for many years, especially for those in the EU and NA.

It's been pretty underwhelming, for sure.

I would agree, I have only played 2 jRPGs this gen, and while I am not a particularly big fan, only 1 of them was as good as any of the 6 I played last gen

JRPGs take long to develop and are therefore more dependent on a high userbase to become less of a risk. Now this generation development costs have drastically increased and the console predicted to dominate is stuck in last place. All these factors have made the typical JRPGs developers hesitant to move fully into this generation. You know that this is true when the PS2 still got good JRPGs up until the end of 2008. It didn't take that many years until the PS1 was left behind in favor of the next generation, mainly the PS2.

It's only going to get better from here on out, now that Dragon Quest X has been confirmed for the Wii. The other developers will follow and the PS2 will be abandoned which finally gives this generation all resources poured into JRPG development. The majority of these games will be made for the Wii and of course the DS, but the other systems won't be left with empty hands.

depends on the game. Not all JRPGs are FFXIII.

Yes, this gen does seem very underwhelming. Even the 360 with all the praise it gets, can't hold a candle to either ps1 or ps2 when it comes to JRPGs. It seems like the genre simply died with the JP gaming industry or simply switched to handhelds only.

JRPGs are a dying genre sadly. Time to move on.

Got yourself mixed up with MMORPG there buddy. Also you mentioned DQ X, do you understand how the release of flagship DQ and FF games work? DQ IX this fiscal year, FFXIII next fiscal year, Versus which has a huge budget 2011 and DQ X 2012.

Nope. I think The World Ends With You is the best JRPG I have ever played. Even better than Chrono Trigger. I was getting sick to death of the genre, so it's a real breath of fresh air.

not at all. we've got plenty of great jrpg games mostly for ds and psp(world ends with you, ASH, crisis core, inazuma eleven) especially if we add all turn based rpgs.

No. This gen seems like a gen where devs try something new with RPGs. See: TWEWY, Inazuma Eleven, Sigma Harmonics, etc.

With the DS, everything is "trying something new". No gaming device had dualscreens before.

WOW soriku, devs should have gone with the tried and tested forumula of making great JRPG instead of experimenting and creating those train wrecks.
