Forums - Sales Discussion - PSP reaches 50 million units worldwide (sell-in units)!

I don't see PSP2 until at least 2012, economy meltdown or not.

Xmas 2010 Japan, Spring 2011 here at the earliest. If Sony really put their weight behind PSP like they are promising (big games coming), then it don't think we'll see PSP2 before 2012, either.

So 5 million psp's are sitting on shelves? 200 million games sold and almost never having a single unbundled game crack the npd top 40?

Hmmmm...

Thats pretty good actually...not too bad...before this NO ONE even came close to competing with Nintendo in the Handheld market....Now that Sony has put out a legitimate competitor for Nintendo...handheld systems will only get better and better....good job Sony...and good job Nintendo for putting out the Wii...

Competition is the best we are the winners in the end!

That's true!

@Just2Fresh

Game Gear? I mean previous competitor.

PSP has done what no handheld barring nintendo has every done

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

@Darth... it had done that years ago, the highest handheld before had been the GameGear which only sold like 10-11 million units (I think).

Also... I will post what I did in the other thread in regards to undertracking.

Who was it with the gif in their avatar explaining this situation? Sony used to count all manufactured units as shipped, and thus the 5.5 million is a combination of a small amount of VGChartz undertracking, stock on shelves, and replacement units under warranty

You said it in your own post. They used to do it, but not anymore. They shipped 50m PSPs to retailers.

Well the problem has been that people have combinced the two different methods to try find the total to retail... which is very innacurate, so scottie COULD have been right.

However, I am positive this is (finally) the actual shipped figure we ave wanted all this time, I have suspected the PSP was undertracked quite a while, in fact I was expecting ioi to notice and bump it up before Christmas (which is why in the broken prediction league for LTD HW as of Jan 3rd 2009 I put the PSP above the Wii, even though the trends of the figures at the time showed it would pass it handily)

That and the "wrong" way to do it, ie combining old product shipments, and new retail shipments actually gives a figure of 52-53 million.

So yes, the PSP is undertracked... probably by about 4-4.5 million.

Game Gear was one hell of a handheld back in the day, but it was too big, and battery life was really, really bad.

So PSP Adjustments incoming?

@Mai

Gamegear was an awesome handheld but I dont think it gave the Gameboy much of a competition as the Psp is doing right now
