Forums - Sales Discussion - PSP Outsells DS Tales of Sales

February 12, 2009 @ 07:10 PM EST

(Due to university assignments and that flu from last week, I'm still working on the second part of the Saving the Tales of Series article. So in the meantime, here's a smaller article for you all. :))

It's no shocker to long-time series fans that Namco-Bandai has been releasing Tales of games left and right lately. Last year had Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut (PS2), Tales of Rebirth (PSP), Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Wii), Tales of Vesperia (X360) and Tales of Hearts (NDS), with Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 being the last currently released game (January 2009). That's five games in one series in one year (six if you consider Radiant Mythology 2 because it was announced in 2008). One would think releasing so many games in such a short time span would hurt the main franchise (new games, not ports or revamps like Director's Cut).

Well, it seems like that is starting to happen. According to VG Chartz.com's data for Tales of Hearts, on the game's first week of sales, it sold about 140,000 copies. The second week nosedived to about 34,000 copies, and two weeks after that it was in the mid-thousands. Now, according to VG Chartz.com's data for Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2, the game sold over 200,000 copies in its first week, and Kotaku is reporting that the game sold around 45,000 copies in its second week, still ranking #1 in the Japanese charts.

Radiant Mythology 2, a spin-off game in the franchise, and for the PlayStation Portable, which lags behind the Nintendo DS in system sales, sold more on its first and second week than a main series game. One could attribute that to the game having characters from the previous games, so fans of the older games would enjoy seeing characters they remember, unlike a new game with brand new characters.

In any case, this might be a sign that Namco-Bandai needs to slow down the flow of games being released in the series each year. It's basic economics that if you flood the market with multiple products all at the same time, you'll lessen your sales than if you had spread out the releases over time. Perhaps Namco-Bandai might be realizing that now that they can see how the sales are being affected.

Hm this is very unexpected. Not only is Tales of Hearts a Main Series title it is also a 2d tales which is more popular in Japan. Also from what I've seen of Radiant Mythology 2 it isn't as good as a game as tales of hearts(beat the game and ranks as my second favorite tales out of playing 5 tales of games).

It's not surprising at all. Main Tales games sell best on home consoles, handheld games always seem to hit a wall. But the ToW series was born on handhelds and is based entirely around being fanservice.

@claude

isn't tales of hearts born on a handheld??

anyways PSP is a true SW BEAST in japan

Are the games' plots connected? Because if they are I'm not going to touch any of them with a 10 foot pole.
I have yet to play a "Tales of" and there's too many of them out there, it'd be a massive undertaking.

No their plots are not connected, except for the respective sequels of course.

After playing Destiny 2 and Rebirth on PSP didn't really like their battle system, but loved Destiny Remake on PS2, awesome combos and cool moves!

I've always thought that the PSP was just better suited for them :x I just like my RPG's on the bigger screen xD And the PSP has more processing power for "epic", which is always another good factor for me in them. I'm surprised the PSP hasn't gotten more JRPG love than it has to be honest.

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

I still maintain that the RPG selling power of the playstation portfolio is reamining untapped.

People really overrate how well RPGs sell on the DS outside of the big franchises.
