I think, we should call it a crash only if at least two of the this-gen consoles would get axed.
Some third parties crashing has no overall effect on the industry. Even if EA or Activision-Blizzard would crash, there would be simply a bit less games, and that simple.
Of course, Nintendo is winning big, and the other two are financially secured by their other brands.
There is a possibility that if the recession keeps hurting them they will leave the video game industry at the end of the generation, but not violently, during the generation, like in a crash.
So..there was a second crash I was not aware of?

yea, the Wii doesn't count as video game sales. If you sum this generation and compare it to the PS2, it is WAY behind. Were going to have 2 crashes right on top of each other.

Can you give some proof that it has really been on top for that long? And in the later periods, it does seem that the PC is no longer the biggest in most areas (it even falls behind the PS3/X360 in certain areas).
Of course, World of Warcraft alone is on size, if not bigger than, the Ps3, so including that the PC market would be the biggest.
Kinda depends on how you count it I guess. |
Why exactly would you not include WoW in the PC revenue ?
That's like saying you don't include Ninteno in consoles lol........
PC revenue is still above and beyond console revenue just because of MMORPG...
You have around 20-25 million players worldwide playing MMORPG and forking 10-15$ a month. That alone is at the minimum 2.5 billion $ of revenue on subscription not counting expansions and stuff....Add those in and the MMORPG market alone is probably around a 5 billion $ market yearly and it is still growing ( can't find actual numbers from market research, if anyone has them please link them).
Not everyone that plays MMORPGs in the world pays $10-$15 a month, many people in China and Korea (where the bulk of the WoW audience is) play at netcafes at an hourly rate.
A market which is supposed to be of such a large size should be far more visible in terms of revenue and other factors than the PC gaming market is.

What's the probability of the industry entering it's third crash? |
I'm actually surprised it took so long for Midway to bankrupt, I mean 10 years without a profit .
BTW what were the first and the second crash ?

The first crash was in 1977. The other (and more known) was in 1983

No, I suspect you are aware of the 2nd one... 1983/84.
There was a crash of the non-programmable consoles in the 1970's also.
Crash #1.
