Didn't Golden Axe have like a ~$25-30 million budget and sold like 40k?

I played golden axe and there is no way in hell that cost 25-30 mil. Not possible...unless they were burnig money for fun.

Games cost much because of:

CGI - not in golden axe

Licenced music and voice acting - not in golden axe

co-op and online game design - not present in golden axe

Amazing visual and high quality textures - not in golden axe

Golden Axe looked and played like a ps2 game.

I can't find hard numbers, but that wouldn't surprise me at all. It did have a decent development cycle, and was supposed to have a sequel. The game was supposed to be a big hit. Why the hell they trusted the people who did Final Fight: Streetwise not to fuck it up is beyond me though. It is like the developer has a mission to fuck up all the titles I loved when I was a kid.

Guilty Gear 2 wasn't done by sega (nor Sammy since it isn't an arcade machine).

To me it seems like Sega did all the right moves in 2008. Hell, even games like Viking and the Club probably broke even when considering sales for ps360 combined.

They also had the Bijing Olympics which sold well.

Someone mentione that Yen could be to blame and while this may be partially true, it just seems to me that these companies are ran by retards who failed Grade 11 Accounting.

Huh. I thought Sammy owned the series for some reason, but that appears to be entirely incorrect. Maybe Outlaw is on the right path with the recent push for a few games or at least the publishing rights to them. I had also forgotten about Golden Axe. My life was better for a brief time.

Edit: I typed that up before I read your post. I had gotten some bad info on the history of the series which now seems like it was just a desperate attempt to explain why it sucks ass these days.

Where the heck would they have spent 25 million$ on Golden Axe development ?

Private parties and hookers ? Because the game sure doesn't look they spent a lot of time developing it...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

SEGA's never been known for their financial wizardry, i think. why they had to abandon the console race despite having 11 million Dreamcasts on the market by the time they dropped out, which they could have expanded on for an easy second place that generation. Only 15 million more in 4 more years and they would be over both GameCube and Xbox LTD

Anyway, SEGA would probably be doing much worse if not for Wii, as well as Superstars Tennis 360 bundle and Phantasy Star Portable. These i think were the moneymakers. Certainly Valkyria Chronicles did some damage (despite it's apparent awesomeness) as did Golden Axe (relating to its suckitude)

SEGA just can't really get it together.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Don't they have a lot of non software production related buisnesses like Pachinko machines, arcades and stuff which have been hit really hard by the economic downturn.

Ah Sega only eh?  Have to read the report.

I was searching the net and all I could find was a commentor saying how the rumored budget was $27 million.

Games that might have lost money.

Golden Axe (was supposed to have a big budget desptite being garbage.)

Valkira Chronicles (Doesn't look expensive, but it did have a custom engine.)

Viking Battle for Asgard (Mediocre HD game, prolly cost something.)

Condemned 2 (Probly cost a lot.)

Bejing 2008 (?)

Sonic Unleashed (HD)

The Club

Nights

Hey also note that the 5 billion is down from 15 billion despite the economic downturn.... (Because they supported the Wii?)

The Club could also have been very expensive.....

Golden Axe (was supposed to have a big budget desptite being garbage.) - it jsut isn't possible this game cost more than 10 million. Sega is not bonkers, they would hve stopped the production of one of their beloved franchises in the beta stages if it was to cost that much and have such results.

Valkira Chronicles (Doesn't look expensive, but it did have a custom engine.) - I think youre right

Viking Battle for Asgard (Mediocre HD game, prolly cost something.) - Broke even is the best scenario

Condemned 2 (Probly cost a lot.) - Monolith did the development and they are known for producing great results while not breaking the bank. the game sold a million so I think it should have made a profit.

Bejing 2008 (?) - Made money for sure. Sega has these olympic games sitting around and all they do is give it a reskin and update the names.

Sonic Unleashed (HD) - you may be right but the SD and HD sonics togehter most likely made money

The Club - lost some cash for sure

Nights - lost cash as well, especially with reports it was initially being designed as a ps360 game.

Hey also note that the 5 billion is down from 15 billion despite the economic downturn.... (Because they supported the Wii?)

Some good points above...you forgot Universe at War for PC and 360 which sold nothing. However if you look at the sales of other games, I believe any loses should have been recovered by sales of rehashes, sonic titles and othr successful ventures.
