Forums - Gaming Discussion - would you like a 'one console' generation?

If MS and Sony were to make a joint console, I'd be certain that many antitrust suits will be on the way!

Just look at the beefpacking companies in the US! When the 2nd largest firm tried to buy the 3rd largest firm, their competitors filed many suits to prevent it from happening.

There will never be two or fewer consoles because there will always be an audience for cutting edge technology, and one for casuals. There has been a hardcore and a casual in every generation.

This one:
PS3/Wii
Last one:
Xbox/Gamecube
The one before that:
Jaguar/64
Before that:
Neogeo/ SNES
before that:
megadrive/NES

EDIT: i meant that there would always be at least 2

Two consoles are better than 3. I liked when it was just basically PSX and N64.

Dude, Ive see you post some dumb stuff before, but calling the NES, Snes, N64 or GameCube "Casual" consoles is just you showing your blindness. The concept of casual gaming didnt really come about in force for consoles until the PS2 with things like Buzz and the eyetoy. The PS2 catered a lot more casual software than the GC did. Minus for a few 3rd party NES titles, Nintendo never really catered to a "casual" crowd.

Yes, I would like to have only one console on the market and that would be something like wii. That would be the best case scenario, but I don't think its happening in near future.

It's odd that everyone on this thread has chosen to ignore what the idea of a unified platform would really mean, and has decided to go for the simplistic 'monopolies are bad' argument.

I think a unified platform future would be great. Notice that that doesn't mean a monopoly. Windows is a single platform, but there are lots of companies making windows compatible computers. DVD is a single platform, but there are loads of manufacturers for DVD players. For games, a unified platform would mean an agreed set of specs for all compatible hardware, which could be manufactured by any approved company, which would lead to the same competition for prices we see in other areas. Price competition, in the true sense, is pretty much non-existent in gaming.

The old argument against a unified platform was that it stifled technological advancement. That's not really a tenable argument now, as there are multiple games developers competing against one another, which is always going to push the tech envelope. A unified platform would also help those developers, as it would do away with the need for multi-platform development costs, and would immediately kill off the horrors of the 'bad port'.

I think it's a great hope for the future, but I don't see it for some time.

Perhaps for you, I don't think I'd ever wish the market to conform to my taste only, a lot of people would be upset or disappointed I think! I don't see any scenario where only one console would be good for us, imagine the price of hardware, games and other content and accessories and the lack of diversity in the game library! Not to mention the amount of crap games.

Sounds like communism. So I'd say no.

Take a look at my photos on flickr

I would like their to be 2 consoles at most next generation...one for Hardcore games composed of a Microsoft and Sony combination....and one for casual games like Nintendo....lets face it they have that market DOWNPACKED...2 consoles would be way better and affordable in the future and we could enjoy all games without dumb exclusives for one system or exclusives on another system...thats a nice dream....

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
