There used to be an issue A LONG time ago where the early PS3s didn't properly detect whether they should go into 480p, 720p, or 1080i based on the capabilities of the set and the media you were trying to view (whether it was DVD, BD, or a game). The most common complaint was that native 720p games (Resistance) would automatically go down to 480i or 480p instead of going up to 1080i on older HDTVs (ones bought before ~2005/06 that didn't commonly support 1080p at all, regardless of size).

Do a search for the 1.30 firmware patch for more info. The problem was fixed shortly after launch (I want to say around Christmas of 06).

The problem was with 480p/1080i TV:s when playing natively 720p content, not with 720p ones like Dryden implied.

The problem should have been fixed, but i'd recall someone saying that there still exists some issues.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I have a HD-tv that supports everything from 1080i and below. If you have the same there should be no problem whatsoever. You can put in a HDMI cable because you can input the 1080, although it can only show in native 720p.

But that's ok actually, because there are only a handfull of PS3-games that run on 1080p!

The problem is that the PS3 doesn't have a scaler chip in it at all, so if you have an older HDTV that only supports 1080i (and not 720p), then you'll be playing a lot of games in 480p.  This is still a problem for all PS3 games that only support 720p as the PS3 cannot scale the resolution.

A few games natively render in either 720p or 1080i, and a some games offer 1080i support where they render in a strange resolution such as 960x1080 and then stretch that to 1920x1080 using pixel ratios.  That's a very poor man's scaling, though, so it will look a little jagged.
