Mr Khan said: Random story on how i discovered One Piece
Remember that One Piece's chances in America were utterly dashed because they gave this immaculate franchise to 4Kids for initial localization, which is how i was initially exposed to it. I found a wacky, somewhat kiddy franchise with a bunch of juvenile precepts that was just okay. When they suddenly switched to Funimation dubs, i literally remember going to check to see if this was the same show or series, because though the characters looked the same, everything was also different, and so so much better. But then Toonami dropped the franchise randomly in the middle of the Skypiea arc, and that was the end of it, as i wasn't watching anime online at the time. Cut ahead to college, where my Japanese teacher encouraged us to watch subbed anime, for exposure to the language (though raws were better, she claimed, but i couldn't understand anything at the time), so for a time i was watching Naruto, but it was like "this is on TV, it's redundant" (little did i know that Toonami itself would go belly-up soon and drop Naruto entirely anyway), and decided it was time for a change. So i thought "that One Piece was a neat little series, but its not on anymore. I'll watch that." After struggling to find the right site (as i was exclusively on AnimeCrazy before this point, but AC had horrible One Piece links then and now), i started watching, and damned if i didn't find the best show ever. |
I could never get into One Piece when it was on the Cartoon Network. I tried but the character designs were just too wild for my serious mind. Glad you liked it, though. I'm a Full Metal Alchemist guy, myself.
