Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 Is Undertracked?(Sony shipments out)

one million acceptable you could say well they overshipped but the difference it's 2 million it 's undertracked by at least 500,000 - 1 million.

The PS3 is not under tracked. Wishing for it to be true doesn't make it so. Sony got hit with a combination of things that caused the PS3 to sell much less than anticipated:

Strong Yen: The strong yen dramatically cut down their profit margin. This combined with the 360 price cut reduced the PS3's holiday sales.

The Poor Economy: The economy going into the tank made a $400 PS3 too expensive of choice for many consumers when were $250 Wii's and $200 360's available.

No Breakout Holiday Title: Sony didn't have a holiday title that non-PS3 owners considered a must have. The needed a game that did what MGS4 did earlier in the year. I think this is largely to do with the strong yen/poor economy. If the economy hadn't tanked and Sony was able to get price the PS3 at $300 for the holiday season, I think Little Big Planet would have been that game.

Circuit City tanking: Circuit City is the second largest retailer in the US and they are currently in liquidation. They are shutting down all 567 stores. Several manufacturers got burned by this. Anything bought by Circuit City on credit will have to be returned to the manufacturer if it remains unsold. I wouldn't be surprised if a large chuck of the unsold PS3's and 360's weren't in their inventory.

I would say it's not entirely unlikely that there are 2 million PS3's on store shelves, PS3 was expected to making a killing this christmas, bringing the gap down to 5 million (if some of the more optimist PS3 fanboys were to believed).

I would believe that the PS3 were undertracked if this was any other month(s) in the year, but this was the holiday season and I'm guessing Sony gambled big on winning big last christmas and fell flat on their faces.

PS3 lunched in some new countries not so long ago.we have no idea how they are doing there.or africa or india or Middle east or.....

you see my point?

Don't forget portugal!

Seriously people just overbought 2 million isn't a lot when you greatly miss what your system is expected to sell.

FY 2006 shipments = 3.57
FY 2007 = 9.24
FY 2008 Q1-3 = 8.45
-------------
total: 21.26

It adds up nicely

Is that accounted for the adjustments on what Sony considers shipped?

Since they used to count shipped as "PS3's in a warehouse in our back lot."

While I really don't care, look at the people arguing Sony shipped too many consoles, they are the same who couldn't wait to see the shipments numbers since they swore the PS3 was dead. Well undertracted, overtracted, they are 21 million PS3 out as of december 31st.

Good job Sony.

I really have not dont have much thought on the matter to be honest. We know MS annonced not long ago that from its sales data places like npd, media chart the british one what ever its called that they were ahead of the ps3 by 8 million consoles. I would take this as been very close to being true as sony never came out and said that MS was wrong in there statment. VG charts has the gap at 8 million as well so it seems that the numbers are in and around correct. Maybe they are off by 300k or so but when talking about such huge numbers that isnt really all that bad. All Im saying is that MS using sales data from companys that deal in exactly that put the 360 at 8m ahead so it must be pritty close to that(as I siad sony never really said anything against this which they easly could have by producing the same numbers from the same comapnys) and thats what vgcharts has it at.

What clear is that MS lied when they said a 8 million lead in shipment figures ...after shipments official figures both consoles are apart some 6.67 million not 8 million.

What is clear is that sony jsut posted a 97% drop in profits, and that's the facts...
