Forums - Gaming Discussion - PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 Graphics Gap Will Start To Widen

Hmmm PS3 still has a ways to go before it can be considered to have fully ironed out all the kinks.

Even now there are many multi plats were screen tearing on the PS3 port is just chronic.

I do concede however that the PS3 developed titles are looking as good if not marginally better than the Xbox 360.

I do maintain however that the PS3 will be hamstrung in effect by the decision to employ the Cell chip with a comparitively weak GPU.

There are physical problems in the consoles design that will never be overcome.

Of course they'll start to widen. PS3 is the most powerful system by far, that's a raw cold fact.

Well, the 360 has better RAM design and a far better GPU, so i do not know if your "raw cold facts" are for real

Also gets the biggest and most detailed next gen looking worlds, while most PS3 games are in linear small paths, hardly next gen at all

Epic fail!

X360's GPU:

- 48 dynamically scheduled pipelines with 2 ALUs each (1 vector4, 1 scalar)

- 16 texture units, 8 render output units

- 240 GFLOPs (48 pipelines x 5 shader ops x 2 flops/shader op x 500 MHz)

- 8 gigatexels/sec, 4 gigapixels/sec, 16 gigasamples/sec (4xAA x 4 GP)

- 232 million transistors.

PS3's GPU:

- 24 multi-way programmable pipelines with 5 ALUs each (2 vector4, 2 scalars, 1 texture unit)

- 8 vertex pipelines with 2 ALUs each (1 vector4, 1 scalar)

- 32 unfiltered texture samples, 24 texture units, 8 render output units

- 330 GFLOPS (24 pipelines x 11 shader ops x 2 flops/shader op x 550 MHz + 8 pipelines x 5 shader ops x 2 flops/shader op x 500 MHz)

- 300 million transistors.

X360's memory:

- 512MB GDDR3 at 700 MHz, 22.4GB/s bandwidth (1400 MHz x 16 bytes data bus)

- 10 MB EDRAM at 500 MHz, 256GB/s bandwidth (500 MHz x 512 bytes data bus)

PS3's memory:

- 256MB XDR RAM at 3200 MHz, 25.6 GB/s bandwidth (3200 MHz x 8 bytes data bus)

- 256MB GDDR3 at 700 MHz, 22.4GB/s bandwidth (1400 MHz x 16 bytes data bus)

These are facts any small research can show you so I have tangible proof which is called knowledge thus killing any type of opinion which you have. =D!

Fail on your part sir,the 360 Memory can be divided unevenely therefore they can put more RAM towards graphics and have better graphics than CPU,where the PS3 is stuck with 256mb each!

And 360 GPU has UNIFIED Pipeline which means the GPU is very flexable,as where the PS3 gpu you can only get so much for textures and what not thats why 360 games generally have better textures.

From IGN bout the GPU's

Bandwidth
The PS3 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and 25.6 GB/s of RDRAM bandwidth for a total system bandwidth of 48 GB/s.

The Xbox 360 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and a 256 GB/s of EDRAM bandwidth for a total of 278.4 GB/s total system bandwidth.

Why does the Xbox 360 have such an extreme amount of bandwidth? Even the simplest calculations show that a large amount of bandwidth is consumed by the frame buffer. For example, with simple color rendering and Z testing at 550 MHz the frame buffer alone requires 52.8 GB/s at 8 pixels per clock. The PS3's memory bandwidth is insufficient to maintain its GPU's peak rendering speed, even without texture and vertex fetches.

Which boils down to the PS3 needs more RAM for its GPU,its being held back where as the 360 is more open.

ROTFLMAO...as reported by whom?

wont happen with multiplat, because sony does not pays the devs to invest more on ps3 to look better, that would reduce profits, ps3 development is already the most expensive. conclusion only first and second party games will look better. 2times better ??? like the price that is 2 times the 360 price? i dont think so

Wow been seeing these threads for two years and we are debating it with a game that hasnt even been released KZ2. Look the leap (if there is one) is not going to matter enough to sway anyone from the 360 to PS3.

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

We really have to look at history if we wish to become educated on...well, on anything. Granted, business can be fickle and Sony and Microsoft have switched roles in more ways than one in this new generation, but we can only go by what we've learned in the past. And if we examine the previous generation, one should compare the graphical leap shown on the systems.

Now, if you compare PS2 launch titles to later games like Final Fantasy XII, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Gran Turismo 4, and God of War II, it's like you're comparing titles on two completely different platforms. The reason for this, as everyone already knows, is because developers had a terrible time getting accustomed to the new architecture. They complained bitterly at the launch of the system, so it's no surprise that it took five or six years for the PS2 to start pumping out the truly brilliant-looking games. Now, these same developers complained in much the same fashion when the PS3 launched, but this time around, Sony appears to have offered much more in the way of help to third-party developers, and first-party developers are really excelling.

In direct comparison, we can't say the visuals in late-gen Xbox games looked that much different than Halo, and again, the reasons are obvious: developers loved how accessible the system was, and many claimed to be able to access much of the system's capability from the start. Again, that same thing happened with the 360, which is why we really haven't seen anything too massive in the way of visual leaps. Sure, Gears of War 2 looks amazing, but not significantly more amazing than the original. And some studios are even claiming they've already maxed out the 360, which you can choose to believe or not (we won't comment; we're not developers). On the flip side, Killzone 2 is absolutely the best-looking game of the generation (just trust us on this), and Guerilla has said they have not gone as far as they can with the PS3. Combine this with David Jaffe's comments concerning what he has seen of God of War III, and what we can probably expect in terms of visuals from other exclusives (Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, etc.)...and well, it seems quite clear.

From here on out, you will see the visual gap between the PS3 and 360 widen. It's basically inevitable, as Sony and more importantly, developers, have been saying since the start of the generation. Multiplatform titles will probably continue to look mostly the same across both consoles, but it's becoming clearer that if you let devs off the chain and dive into the PS3 without having to worry about the 360, they can really create something dazzling. Last generation, when the Xbox launched, its launch software put most PS2 games to shame (graphically). But by the time the generation was over, the aforementioned PS2 titles competed quite favorably with the best the Xbox has to offer. This time around, I think we're seeing an earlier-than-expected acceleration of the PS3's power, and the future exclusives will prove that Sony absolutely has the visual edge this time around. The only question is, how far will they push the gap...?

Even if everything that is said above is true is it a smart stratergy?  I mean taking 3-5 years to be able to develop to full potentail on a system does not seem to be a winning stratergy.

i dont understand why this thread still pop up, the ps3 is third, it lost this gen, live with it. On the other hand the 360 didnt win this gen is in second place again like last gen, nintendo won and that is the least powerful console out now.

That means less powerful systems always win,uh oh! If Nintendo decides to Re-release the NES were all doomed!

More fanboy crap sourced from a amateur fanboy site. No proof provided just religious like 'faith'.

I don't recall developers whining about the PS2 being difficult to develop for. I do recall Sony's PR campaign on the 'Emotion Engine' (much like they did with the 'Cell').

All this article does is state the obvious for ALL gaming systems. That is the developers are able to squeeze ever more out of the respective consoles as the years go by. Duh!

Do some of you really think Gears 2 is the best graphics the 360 will ever produce? Just 3 years into it's life? Would you say the Wii has been maxed?

Keep on dreaming.

do people think Killzone 2 is the best PS3 can do after 2 years in its life?

Of course not! the PS3 and 360 still have a LOT more to offer but trying to make out the PS3 will offer more when the 360's GPU is better (fact) is silly, ignoring facts just to make your console look better isn't the way to do things and you know it,

All the consoles still have loads more to offer, trying to make out the PS3 will suddenly leave the 360 in the dust is pure rubbish, multiplats still run and look better (90% of the time) on the 360, developers have made it crystal clear that the 360 still has loads left it in,

If anything it will be the 360 that keeps getting better, the PS3's GPU and memory issues can only offer so much, when these limits are finally reached the 360 will start to stride ahead.

Also, regarding the Killzone 2 only using 60% of the PS3 power comments, maybe you should look at the latest interview (on here somewhere as I read it) where the developer clearly says the PS3 is often maxed out when running Killzone 2.

the multiplat look better on the lead platform,,,,it's not a general rule at all and does not ahve anything to do with capabilities of PS3 or 360.

the guy says while running killzone 2 PS3 is NO WHERE NEAR MAXED OUT.

well as of now, PS3 at its second year is out doing 360 in its third year.and that my friend is the fact. ;)  (in exclusive titles)

I suggest you take a look at the LATEST interview with the Killzone developers, it is on VG somewhere and they clearly said whoever mentioned the 60% PS3 power usage was wrong, They then said the game often maxes out the PS3, They also said they have got every drop of power they could out of the platform (at this time),

Like I said above, look it up if you don't believe me, then you will see lol.

And regarding you saying the PS3 is out doing the 360 in its third year, I totally disagree (and I own them both), the 360 has games that look a lot better than any other PS3 title (IMO) out to buy at this moment in time (killzone could change this though but I will wait to play it before passing judgement), Gears 2 makes most PS3 games look rubbish (IMO), then take a look at the multi platform games such as fallout 3, Fifa 09, COD: WAW, COD 4 and GRID etc, they all run and look a LOT better on 360,

If the PS3 was so great why does it have trouble running games at true 1080P with 4xAA and V-Sync enabled at a stable framerate? that's right, it can't! this is why most multi platform games have a reduced resolution with no AA and no V-sync on PS3 making the games look blurry, jaggy whilst having lots of screen tear (and don't get me started on the framerate issues the PS3 games seem to have),

Apart from those valid issues I mention above yes, the PS3 is great lmao.....

@haxxiy

Xbox 360 is unified, you never have to loose cycles to adress the other 256MB ram, like you have to do on PS3

Also the GPU uses unified shaders which practically are utilized 90%+ comparing to 60%+ of the separate ones, again anything PS3 has more in raw power, 360 surpasses easilly with design

The shader pipeline is also wider and with above SM3.0 specs than a normal DX9 card PS3 has

And the 10MB EDRAM help both free ram and bandwidth in a huge way
