Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why has piracy seemingly killed the psp but doest hurt the 360 too much?

speaking off of personal experience I know plenty of people including myself that proudly haven't spent a dime on any 360 games in a couple of years but own every game possible. I also know some people who do the same with the psp .. so why is it that piracy affects the psp more than the 360.. especially since its easy as pie to pirate both?? all I read around the net is how its not worth developing for the psp because of piracy..

Xbox Live?

I know... my english sucks

I thought you need to mod 360's hardware to play pirated games, whereas on the PSP it's much easier.

On the PSP there's also the "problem" that many people buy the console not for PSP games, but for media features and playing emulators and such.

Probably b/c the big thing is live---and nodded boxes are at your own risk on there

Well, I won't send you to hell for pirating, there'll be plenty of other people to do that. But I don't condone it either.

To answer your question, I have two reasons:
1) Xbox Live: The risk of playing a burnt game online (higher if it's a not even released game like that Gears 2 episode a few months back and Halo 3 before that) is that somehow MS can detect that you aren't playing on an official disc and give your xbox console a lifetime ban, meaning no xbox live ever for that console.

It's unlikely that many people would care about that, seeing as how we all went fine on the PS2 with 99% of games having no online content whatsoever.

2) This ones the more likely. RROD. As you are aware, console warranties are voided the second the case is opened and since alot of early 360 modding involved opening the case, only those brave enough pirated games, and the rest of us decided they wouldn't run the risk of having a completely warranty free console.

Even though I've heard that moddings advanced so that opening the case isn't required, I still suspect that the accepted opinion is that modding requires the case opened, case opened voids warranty, we all fear RRoD.

Also don't forget the PSP's been out for way longer, so modding would have been available whilst the 360 was still in R&D.

I severely doubt the attache ratio of the PSP is solely because of pirating. A lot of people buy PSPs for different things than gaming, and that's probably the main factor.

Fuck you you fucking piece of thieving shit.

You are fucking PROUD that you have all games but havent bought a single one.
Well FUCK YOU.

well look at sales of psp games for almost 44mln userbase 100mln games is miserable. plus there is emulators/homebrew and multimedia thing and high price of single game - at least in my country where single 2 year old psp game cost often same as new titles for ps360 of course if you find any game at all.

Because the real reason for the PSP's problems has nothing to do with piracy. It's lack of software support and lack of advertising for the good software it does have. The system is advertised and thus sells. The software is not advertised and does not sell.

A lot of the people seems to be buying the PSP for other things than PSP games, such as media features and emulators, while 360 is bought to play 360 games on it.
Also, 360 games are better fit for the device itself than PSP games. PSP would do better in software sales if the games were more pick-up-and-play type of games (these you get with the emulators), just like DS, since people don't enjoy that much playing games that need more dedication, on handheld systems.
