Forums - General Discussion - Paramount and Dreamworks backs HD-DVD exclusively!

No you cannot go calling people fools and ignorant , most forums and i would hope this one too do not allow such behaviour plain and simple . As for historical fact and trends nothing in this industry is set in stone least of all this generation , many great people have fallen foul of believing in historical occurancies and trends , all i was saying was let us wait and see it is way too early i though that was quite simple , straightforward and sensible . I am not going to sit and argue with somebody so pompous and bigheaded end of story , we will see in the next few years for sure . Sure some companies may stop making games but never has any console manufacturer had so many developers in their ownership so much of that historical fact and trends are irrelevant in today's environment . I apologise for having a different viewpoint since it obviously affects you so much .

Quick question: any Xbox owners out there going to go for the HD-DVD add on after hearing this news?

I'm still on the fence...

The closest I came to buying the addon was when 300 came out. But I'm still waiting to see how all of this plays out... no one wants to get stuck witha $200 add-on that can't play anything in a couple years.

There were recent deals for the add-on for around 135-150usd?  Actually this brings up something interesting.  Why is it that USA always have these "price drops" and slick deals?  I think it's cuz most consumers were price conscious so the strategy for most companies are competing with a low-cost strategy.  There's always a perceived quality and value, but based on trends of price wars and success of walmart, i'd say America, at least, will go for the low priced market, namely the HD DVD.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

GAMEFLY & GOOZEX FTW

If it is nonsense name 1 CONSOLE that went from selling at 1/2 the rate of its competition (or less) to leading the generation

Sorry to burst your bubble Squrriel-boy but the PS3 is actually selling better than the 360 worlwide .And once it drops the price in Japan and Europe it will multiply its numbers easily .

""""""Wow, this is truly, truly... huge news. If there was ONE movie I would consider getting in hidef - it would be Transformers. This will do more for sales of HD-DVD players in the US than anything.
So how do PS3 owners feel now... that you CAN'T watch Transformers (or other listed) movies in hidef?
(actually a little surprised, I figured that all studios would eventually go dual formats)""""""""

==> Transformers ? lol
the movie is funny but it is ABSOLUTELY not interesting for his special effect
Robot have no weight, no existence, just special effect,
Look, I own ur Transformers with 2 french advertissement :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0I8bBisPdQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_R3VnKHjF0U

or u can try The War of the Worlds from Speilberg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezyFFv5TFIw

Oh, I forgot that Spielberg movie are not concerned !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And what is Spiderman ? poor shit ?
I hope someone will bring us any rational news allowing us to understand the Paramount's move :
Why do they decide to support the dying format ???
HD DVD is less use base AND less potential sales AND less effective sales (see 300),
Who payed them ??? how many ?
It is obvious there is something we dont know...

So ,Paramount movies were selling 2 units in BR and 1 in HD-DVD and they decide to cut 2/3 of their market becasue they have researched so .Two options

1)Some directives drink too much and then take decisions .

2)Someone is subsidizing Paramount with enough money for them that they can happily drop the format that gives them the higher sales .

In both cases its a shame on Paramount .And for the one that is handling them money to do this .

I am a bit suprised but it isnt so important .If I want Transformers I will buy it in DVD and it is a nice movie but nothing groundbreaking .Now if Lord of the Rings Extended Editions was exclusively available in HD-DVD (not even in DVD ) from the word go then I would consider buying a HD-DVD .Tranformers ?Not even close .

In any case ,this market changes very fast ,maybe we havent heard last word from this issue .Maybe its only a pressure method by Paramount to receive better conditions seeing the conditions Sony is offering Universal to tempt it etc ....We must wait and see .

BR is dying men :

http://www.dvdtown.com/news/fox-and-mgm-gets-back-in-the-blu-ray-game/4679

LOS ANGELES – August 20, 2007 -- Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) today unveiled an aggressive global Blu-ray Disc release strategy including 29 new release and "must-have" catalog titles that runs through the end of the 2007 calendar year. Among the many highlights of the impressive worldwide slate are six day & date BD/DVD new theatrical releases from Fox including the $241 million box-office family favorite FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER and the $335 million box-office action powerhouse LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, four day & date BD/DVD (U.S. only) new theatrical releases from MGM, 19 ´must-have on BD´ films from the two studios´ libraries, Fox´s first-ever TV release on BD – PRISON BREAK -- and Fox´s intention to release at least one state-of-the-art title per month featuring numerous BD ´firsts.´

The only high-definition packaged media universally supported by the film, music, gaming and computer industries, BD is the #1 selling high-definition packaged media. In fact, on a worldwide basis, BD is averaging nearly 70% market-share per week of all high definition titles sold this year and, in the U.S., it is out-performing HD DVD by a margin of 115%.

"Given that Blu-ray has consistently outsold HD DVD all year, and this is the case for any titles released by any studio in both formats, we believe that the time is right for us to accelerate our activities and help convert the nearly 60 million high definition households worldwide into Blu-ray households," noted Mike Dunn, President Worldwide, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. "By the end of this calendar year there will be expansive availability of technically vibrant releases featuring never-before-seen, advanced BD-J interactivity as well as a broad offering of playback devices at attractive prices that will prove to any doubting consumers once and for all that Blu-ray is the only way."

"And as Blu-ray continues to grows stronger, it has become survival of the fittest which is most apparent in the retail landscape where our eager and growing global Blu-ray consumer base has caused a shift that is forcing the allocation of more space to the format that is selling the best. And, in many recent instances of note, top retailers in North America are choosing to promote the Blu-ray format exclusively in their stores," continued Dunn.

Among the BD industry ´firsts´ from the Studios´ upcoming global release slate are picture in picture capability, enhanced viewing and surround sound modes with the ability to mix and match picture and sound, direct access to in-movie features through one of the four colored buttons on the BD remote and the most technically vibrant BD-Java interactive multi-player challenge and trivia games to date. The Studios´ slate also takes full advantage of BD-Live functionality this fourth quarter. Internet-connected consumers will enjoy unique, title specific "web-enabled" interactive features and games and "web-exclusive" downloadable content with the ability to connect and interact with other broadband BD users worldwide.

Cementing its leadership position within the industry - previous BD releases NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM and X-MEN THE LAST STAND rank in the Top 20 best-sellers - the vast majority of the Studios´ upcoming global slate will be presented on 50 GB dual-layer discs with advanced BD-J interactivity and feature numerous Blu-ray exclusive high-definition bonus materials that further realizes BD´s incredible potential. Consumers will enjoy the superior video and audio elements of AVC encoding and Lossless HD audio on many of the coming titles as well as enhanced and integrated menus, personal scene selections, search indexing, trivia and other title specific games and high-definition bonus materials.

Upcoming BD-J features exclusive to priority catalogue titles from Fox and MGM include an "Alien Scavenger Hunt" (INDEPENDENCE DAY) that challenges players to earn points by identifying the correct number of aliens in select scenes to unlock additional bonus features; a "Global Warming Trivia Track" (THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW) where users must correctly answer questions about global warming to keep the Earth´s temperature from rising and being destroyed; and a historical and geographical pop-up map (MASTER & COMMANDER) that tracks the location of Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey and his enemies.

yea im def thinking about it.

Transformers etc will look so nice on my hd tv

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

Its very simple, toshiba payed Paramount enough that releasing only on hddvd was the better $ decision for them.

Its not rocket science.

Whatever hddvd gained from Paramount was just killed by Fox.

==> I dont think it will move a lot of HD DVD
u have to pay extra cost to get it, it is not like PS3, people will just not buy it, and remplace it by game
at the opposite, the PS3 momentum with the price drop is not du to gamer buying PS3 BUT du to people wanting a cheap BR player. In USA, since 1 month, I think BR is helping the PS3 ...
