Playstation phone plans hit snag, reports say

Hardware specs "not high enough"

Will we ever see a Playstation phone? This much-rumored device apparently took a step further from reality this week: the latest design from Sony's joint phone development wing was vetoed by Sony brass, according to reports on Mobile Today.

In the words of a Sony Ericsson spokeswoman: "We feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone."

Sony Ericsson already makes phones branded with Sony trademarks such as Cyber-shot, Walkman, and Bravia, and has been rumored to be preparing a Playstation-branded device -- presumably with a heavy emphasis on providing a fulfilling gaming experience -- for several years.

It all went downhill for Playstation when it started to focus on the specs. I wonder why they are still holding on to this absurd business strategy.

Because it has always been about the specs with the Sony Playstation. Everyone thinks the PS2 was the strongest because of marketing, but in reality the PS1, and PS2 were weaker than their competitors.

Heck, most of Sony's products are "known" to be the best, yet typically they are similar in quality to devices much cheaper by competitors.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

@kownicki

not really

people brought PS2's because it was so betetr than dreamcast and so "powerful"

SONY lied in their marketing n made PS1 & PS2 seem like systems from a distant planet & very powerful.

Wow, they really refuse to learn from their mistakes. This gives me very little hope for the future of the Playstation brand.

I'm not saying that the PS3 is not the most powerful, but its definetaly no way as powerful as they originally marketed the product.

Oh Sony... How did it come to this? The company that made its name known with affordable, portable transistor radios, and that became a household name with the world's first affordable, portable cassette player, has now descended to the point of money-hungry arrogance? They used to be the brand you turned to because they made what nobody else did, and once competition emerged, because they made it for less than everybody else did. Where did things go so wrong?

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Why not just make a psp phone? Its practically destined to happen soon.

Yeah like for the Playstation when they were adding an optical drive which allowed relatively huge games. Or for the Playstation 2 where they talked endlessly about the specs of their emotion engine and added a DVD drive? You mean downhill like those two?

The PS1 and PS2 weren't powerful at all. They focused on games, not technology. The PS3 never had the focus on games, only on technology.

That's why it's losing by an extremely big margin, whereas the PS1 and PS2 were marketleaders by an extremely big margin.
