Forums - General Discussion - I wonder if it would be possible to make Microsoft bankrupt

Man I love how the topic got off topic so quickly, (btw Mummelmann, since you are norwegian you probably prefer linux since it was invnted by the Finns, thus explaing your hate for Mr. Gates which is unneccessary and frankly offensive at your hate for a man who gives so much, when you look at other billionaires like Donald Trump who barely gives anything and is dating supermodel girlfriends every other day, a down to earth, even though a little nerdy, Bill Gates is a relief.) The point that Cobretti (the original topic poster if you have forgotten) was trying to make was, what if 100 milliion PS2 owners went you used this IM system forcing Microsoft to give away millions of dollars, would this result in them being bankrupt. The obvious answer is that 100 million people signing on would help Microsoft, because even in the original link it says that the money is being taken out of the advertising revenue. That means when mroe people sign up, there advertising revenue rises creating more profit for them. It like comparing it to Superbowl ads. More people watch the more you have to pay for ads. So even though Microsoft is giving away more, they are making more, thus making this topic pointless because the chances of Microsoft going bankrupt are extrordinarily low.

Omg... Like I must've said several times on the thread already; I don't hate Bill Gates!! I hate the fact that everyone treats him like a second Messiah sometimes because he gives away from the abundance of money floating up to his ears.

Many people state that especially Bill Gates must be a terrific human being because he donates to charity... Well if you've got one hundred billion dollars (and he had at some point), it's hardly qualifying for saint status if you give half of it away. He still had to butter his bread and sugar his porridge...
Big corporations sometimes donate, as do celebrities, so we'll think higher of them.
That's the only reason they do it, it's not because they're so kind of heart.

I truly hope MS goes bankrupt in the future, I don't like them one bit, and I'm far from the only one!

I think higher of corporations and celebrities because they give to charity. I think higher of anyone who gives willingly, whether they are rich or not.

I wish more people would give to charities, if only because they thought others would think highly of them. I don't see how that's a bad thing.

I never said he was a saint, and guys any chance of talking about the original topic?

Ok, agreed! Does anyone know if IBM, Intel; Apple or any other hardware giant donate to charity? I know most cellphone manufacturers do, but they make less profit per piece of hardware (on average at least).

So yes, I do give. As does the Norwegian government as opposed to the US (the US pays out the same annual sum for 3rd world aid as Norway does, despite the fact that they have an NP over 60 times higher...).

I'm afraid you're a little ignorant of how charity works in the U.S. The vast, vast majority of charitable giving is done through private, not public, organizations. While the U.S. government doesn't contribute the amount per capita to charity that Norway and many other countries admirably give, Americans as a whole are quite generous in this regard. There was an excellent article about this in The Economist some time ago that I can't seem to find online.

Hmm, okay. Makes sense since the market economy rules the US, but I'd still want the government (who boldly claim to wish well for all the poor or oppressed peoples of the world) would give away a bigger slice of the pie. Then again, I'm sure everyone would want everyone to give more.

I think Americans are rather satisfied with the way it is now, actually.  Most people here are happy that our government (and therefore taxes) is smaller than the governments of Europe.  Americans tend to be more distrustful of our government for reasons of history and experience, and as you probably are aware have a far more difficult time giving up power to government.  It will be a cold day in Hell when the U.S. enters an EU-like arrangement with Canada and Mexico, for example.  Note that this is not in any way criiticizing the way a clear majority of Europeans prefer their government.

The US is by far the best country in the world, they give more money and food to poor countries then any other nation. All the rest of the world bitches when the US leaves countries to kill themselfs and they bitch when they do something, i just wish all you people would stop bashing the best country in the world.

lol this is not how i intended the topic to go.

It was ment to be all fun based on the i'm live msn program.
(if anyone actually clicked that link and read it).

The point was do you think you could exploit that system and how many users would you need.

Lol i didnt think so

Alright lets be honost this has been a haven for microsoft bashing people.....

First off, the chances of them going bankrupt are very low, very low. THey might not be doing good at the current moment, but look how much cash microsoft has in backup?

Second, yes bill gates is not the messiah, but anyone who says hes not generous can go die so the millions of people hes helped can shit on their grave. Hes giving tons of money already, while not a huge % of his total wealth, when he dies he is giving a very VERY low % of his money to his children (less then 1%) and the rest goes to charity and other things.

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Sorry to go off topic.

When you do things like this, it is to generate traffic on your network and make people aware of your services while doing a good deed.

Microsoft has, no doubt, set a cap on how much they would contribute. For hypothetical situations, let's say it's 10 million dollars. Once it hits 10 million dollars, they will make a huge announcement about how so many people have done blah blah blah blah and would thank all the patrons who made this possible blah blah blah and then the promotion would end.

@Warlord - The US may be the richest country in the world (though Google says it's Luxembourg, but I don't think that's correct) but it's far from being the best country in the world.

You often see products offering charitable donations if you buy their product. Crisps, for example, I can't believe how many times I've walked into the shops and I've seen banners 'Buy a packet of Brand X and Company Y will donate 1p to Charity Z', I have yet to have heard of a crisp company thats gone bankrupt (except Golden Wonder, not sure about them... but that wasn't down to charity, I don't think).
