Forums - Sony Discussion - Which will get the price cut first PS3 or PS2.?

I have been hearing about impending PS2 price cut to $99 for a long time now.. so just wandering maybe before PS3 price cut we will see a PS2 price cut.

moreover PS2 just need a $25 price cut and PS3 need atleast $50 price cut.. so cutting the price of PS2 will be much easier for Sony too..

So wot do u think?

Ps2.

The Ps2 won't see a price cut..

for starters sony wants money they won't lower profits on the ps2 and turn interest away from the ps3 just as its about to become profitable..

besides isn't the ps2 suppose to die this year?

Predictions.

1. Wii will never reach 50% market share.

2. Kz2 will sell 1.3 first week 3.5 LT.
Sales predictions for 09.

Wii - 69 - 72
PS3 - 32 - 34
X360 - 39 - 41

yeah the ps2 was supposed to get a price cut in the begging of 08 wat happened to that

ps3 will get pc 1st though

PS3. The PS2 isn't going to get another price cut. When it stops selling, they'll stop manufacturing.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

That doesn't make any sense. Sony will cut PS2 price because that will boost PS2 sales and they still make profit from it. Why stop manufacturing when you can still sell product at profit.

A PS2 price cut depends on how much profit they are generating per unit. A reasonable price drop would be down to $99 which is a $30 reduction.

If Sony currently makes $60 profit/unit they would then make $30 profit/unit after the price drop. 50% (1/2) of their current profit would mean they would need to sell 2x as many units after the price drop.

If Sony currently makes $90 profit/unit they would then make $60 profit/unit after the price drop. 66% (2/3) of their current profit would mean they would need to sell 1.5x as many units after the price drop.

This is a very simple model that does not take into licensing fees from games and profits from accessories. However, the number of used games available for the PS2 and the shrinking retail presence of the PS2 means that Sony will profit less for each additional PS2 sale less than they would have even 2 years ago.

IMO - The PS2 may never get a price cut until Sony wants to unload stock when its discontinued. However, I'm not sure if the PS3 will get a price cut this year. So its probably a coin toss.

There will likely be one more proper PS2 price cut.... any cuts after that will just be stock clearance after they stop making them.... The PS2 won't just keep getting little price cuts until it is $10 because cutting manufacturing costs is not a linear process, so there really won't be any way to make the PS2 cheaper now than they have been making it the past coupld of years.

The GameCubes last real price-cut was to $99 I think, which will likely be what the PS2 cuts to, perhaps this Christmas as a last hurrah.

A PS3 price cut depends on how dire it's situation gets.... I fell they will hold out till at least Christmas, so the price cuts may be at about the same time, but Sony may need to hold out longer.

I think a yr ago i read the news here that Sony has started production of PS2 yes PS2 officially in latin america.. and similarly there are quite a few software like Singstar and other which sell well on PS2. and i think some new studios are also allowed to make PS2 games for i think not much royalty.. atleast at that time it look like Sony is trying to capture casual market with PS2 and it was not a bad idea.. casual user are not going to pay $400 for a casual entertainment box..

So i think Sony may very well like to push PS2 in these BRIC countries with customized and localized softwares and may get a proper stream of income secondly it will also promote Playstation brand.. So on the whole it is not a bad idea.. and less than half the price of Wii it may be a good option for new casual market.

I see both getting a price-cut at about the same time, later this year. PS2 will likely drop to $99.99 and PS3 will likely drop to $299.99. Increased PS2 sales should temporarily make up for the lowered profits of each PS2 sold. Furthermore, PS3 will be sold at a marginal loss at $299.99 which will be made up by with increased software sales.
